Once again, I'm glad you sought help, which proves how sane you are--you just have an illness, and fortunately, there are meds that help--one just has to monitor the side effects. Your artwork is effective in conveying confusion. Your words are an eloquent plea for understanding and support. Please know that you have mine. Warm regards- Joan

No, those of us that have not been in a mental hospital cannot really know but we can try to have empathy, to understand and to give support. Thank you Pat for sharing your story, very brave.

A well written piece. I think you did a very good job trying to describe for people what mental illness is. If the person has no clue about mental illness they probably will not get it. While I am lucky enough not to have any of the dozens of types of mental illnesses . I have been around and worked with children who have, so I get it.

This was extremely well written Patricia. It was an honest, bare to the bones explanation of how the disease process can affect an individual and also that there are variations. It details the course of treatment both the good and bad. It was written as a prominent plea for recognition and understanding. I sometimes have difficulty with some of the so-called Christians who are so eager and ready to condemn-maybe time for them to walk a mile in the shoes. Many years ago as a nurse in training we were exposed to many of what I called their guinea pig curriculum. One of which was to arrive at a mental hospital at the start of shift and basically become a patient for the day, without meds of course. We struggled thru all the restrictions but I can guarantee that after each of us had had our day we also had a better understanding. It's unfortunate that they no longer do this. Very well done.

Thank you for the kind and understanding review.aryr. We have a community college with a nursing program and they do come into the mental hospital to observe, but not for an entire day , there living as a patient. I like that idea.

You are so welcome. At the time we all felt we didn't have and choice (and we didn't) but in retrospect we learned so much- we were all dubbed as suicidal so no bars hold for us. We also spent time in a nursing home and a handicap facility. It was a great enlightening experience which I shared with students when I did a short stent of teaching. Blessed be.

I am sure all those experiences made you a better nurse to all of your patients.

Thank you-I always try to remember to walk that mile before I lay comment, although as I get older lol it only takes about half a mile.

Hi Patricia,

Thanks for putting your story out there for your Fanstory friends. If you can help even just one person by doing so, then you have accomplished a great deal. Yes, it's easy for people on the outside to judge, but unless they have been on the inside of things, they don't really have a clue as to what being mentally ill entails.

There is no shame in seeking help. In fact, it shows great strength of character in doing so, even though it involves the person with mental illness having to be in a place where you don't want to be, and where simple every day items are denied them. You have explained it all very well in your write.

I hope things continue to get better and better for you, Patricia.

Connie

Thanks for your lovely review, Connie. I am not ashamed of my illness and neither should anyone else feel shame.

Thanks for being brave enough to write this article, Patricia.
It's true that there's a lot of stigma still attached to mental illness in our society. People should know more about it and not dismiss those who suffer from a mental illness.

Thanks for your lovely review. Maria. I don't necessarily feel brave, but I do want others to be kept from abuse because they have a mental illness, and if I can open some eyes to the problem then I feel it is a calling from God to do so.

Hi Patricia, so sorry if people have misjudged you with this. My mom has experienced the same thing with depression over the years. People always tell her to cheer up or get out of the house. You hit the nail on the head and sometimes, people do just have a chemical imbalance. Sometimes God heals completely and other times he leaves us with a thorn in the flesh. None of us could know God's reasons for why He does what He does. We are all damaged and flawed in some way. I think you explained things very well. The hospital or psych ward does not sound like a place anyone would like to stay in if possible.

Very clearly and lucidly explained. Thank you. It is very good for all of Christ's Body to recognize anyone can be a "hair width away" from suffering from mental illness. We all need to be Christlike in bearing with one another even if we don't understand what the other is going through. Hope you get the right treatment and no bad side effects. Good message!

Thanks for your lovely review. This is just a small effort on my part to enlighten others to an illness that one should not be shamed for.

Patricia,

I commend you for your courage to speak out about this illness. Your words flow smoothly & are informative. I would not have known some of this info without reading your essay.

I believe you are correct about how others perceive those with this illness. Also, we must become more aware of how to help when needed & be less condemning.

Good job & thanks for sharing. Jan
