I wish I had a six left to give. This is such a fantastic poem. I love it. It is heartwarming advice in poetic form. You have created a lovely piece here that we all should heed and learn from. Your rhyme and flow is all there. It is perfection!
Great job. Absolutely!

You have drawn an irresistible road map that introduces all to Nature.
If one never travels this path, life becomes a race to become financially secure; then to travel and find Nature.
A costly mistake, if one is too lame to hike the paths and walk through a shallow stream.
Thanks for the reminder.
As the philosopher says: "... too soon old too late smart."

These abab quatrains remind us the volunteering and helping other helps us make their and our lives better.
I think you can erase the Y between the first and second stanzas.
Keep writing. Happy New Year.

You would think so wouldn't you, Jay?
I mean concerning there being a more fulfilling way to live one's life, as you stated in your authors notes.
Responding to those who review your poetry might be a good place to start.
Have a Happy New Year...

Jaybird, this wisdom is from a life well lived I believe.
Thank you for it...I get more joy from the giving than the getting...serving each other in love is my motto..I teach children and our theme is Do unto others as you want them to do to you...it makes each child stop and think.
God bless.
Happy New Year

I guess you have a point there, especially for folks with no particular ambition. If you don't care about the destination, why try to get there so fast?
However, it cannot be denied that scenic roads tend to be more pleasant, and can be more rewarding than time saved on the freeway. Many writers and philosophers like Henry Thoreau, at Walden Pond, and whoever wrote "Stop and Smell the Roses," have agreed with you, but got there first.
On the other hand, think of all the altruistic deeds you admire, that "successful," driven people of good will, are capable of performing.
But, I think it's possible that your way might be workable for a newbie - on a day-to-day basis.
Happy New Year, and many more, Jay!

There is depth and wisdom in this poem which is very pleasant on the ears and has a delightful cadence and rhythm. The poem itself, has an atmosphere of journeys and travel. My favorite lines are:
But, life should never be a race,
place your ego back in bed.
I like the connotations hidden in the poem, that leading a quiet life without seeking honor, ultimately pays off.
Somehow this poem gives validation to those among us who are more introvert in nature.
A great poem and thanks for sharing, Jaybird1.

I left the main road, dropped out of the race, and in the end it made little difference except I would probably never have reached 74, which seems to be a trifle...people race, automatically, I think. Even when trying to catch a fish. Sports breed this foolishness...excellent poem. Good advice.
