I think the more we age the more we tend to dwell on our mortality. When we are young we think we are invincible and that will live forever. Which is not a bad thing, better to get out there and enjoy life than worry about its end : )) Nice !

No one has more faith than a farmer. He plows the field, sows the seed, and trusts God to provide enough sun and rain to produce a crop. Every year he has one more row to hoe.

Wonderful poem. We all hate chores, but it does seem to keep us going in the right direction in life. Well thought out. Clearly written. Nice succession of memories. Nice work. God bless you :)

Poem with a dedication to a father, and a refrain that gets repeated until by the end it is 'just one more row to hoe' as an echo nearly, of the title.
With this line: We, in our waning years await
I kind of think it might sound smoother like this:
While in our waning years, we wait
and also lifes final afterglow
needs an apostrophe so it's life's ...
Lovely tribute poem!

As ever I am enamored with the wisdom and folksiness of your poetry...
There are so often meanings to lessons our parents taught us that become so much more discernible as the years flow by. Mortality is inevitable...and wise is the man who spends little time awaiting its arrival. "Live while you live then die and be done with it." --said John Gunther in Death Be Not Proud. I've always wondered why people interpret this as a lack of faith. It is not that to me at all. It is acknowledging the end of mortal life in order to move to the eternal!--Karenina
