This is a challenging read as I don't understand what all the words mean and the rhythm takes a bit of getting used to as it changes throughout the poem. I read the authors notes and was then better equipped to understand the poem. A lovely traditional style sonnet which feels like it is much older than it is.

G'day Tony. Another very well written and thought out piece of poetry cobber. That must have been such a hard way to make a living, particularly back in olden times. Brave men indeed. I love that painting as well.

Top job with beautiful imagery.

Cheers Fez

I love the heroic sonnets form and I adore this subject which I addressed in several song lyrics in 2004/5. One day I shall post them here. I particularly liked the idea of the herring buss -- kept on getting this image of the conductor on a herring bus. Very fishy. This is excellent work.

I enjoyed your comment about the Herring Buss! I couldn't resist it - though I understand it was a bit out of context, being a boat more of the continental side of the North Sea.

You seem to know a lot about the sea. I live about as far from an ocean as you can get in the US. Thank you for defining the terms or I would have been lost. Very well written as always, my friend~Debbie

Tony, Seems like I'm forever asking (begging) you to read my work, but it is only because I so much value your skills with blank verse and meter. Could you take a look at the crown of sonnets I wrote, if you have time. I don't think it is even paying anymore, but I would truly appreciate it, my friend~Debbie

I read a list of most dangerous occupations somewhere, and fishing was near the top. Seven tenths of the Earth and rising...those fishermen know the real world...this looks to me like an excellent heroic sonnet...

Excellent use of vocabulary and poetic phrases, Tony.

Brilliant imagery throughout.

Top metaphors, and I particularly like the dramatic visual metaphor of, 'in estuaries ablaze with winter's glow'.

My only nit-pick is the necessary abbreviation of 'mackerel' to meet the meter the way the line is written, as I always find abbreviations distracting.

Well said about how dangerous a trawlerman's life is, and what a necessary task it performs.

Top post, my friend.

Cheers, Ray.

16th Century England..
Well..this is a nice sonnet and the poet knows a lot about fishing boats and sea life. It should be read aloud, but would be a difficult read.
I like it.

I love poems of fishermen, fishing, and the sea, Tony. I like this longer sonnet form...is there a name for it? Your poem held my interest and as always, your rhymes, alliteration, metaphor, and enjambment are wonderful. I do have a question regarding the meter in line 6... I scan it as

in EStuARies aBLAZE with WINter's GLOW

Am I wrong?

Smiles,
Karyn :-)

Very many thanks for your review of The Winter Fishing Fleet, Karyn. I'm a little behind with my responses as it's been a particularly busy couple of weeks for me. However, I very much appreciated your comments. You are right about line 6. 'Estuaries' is, as you point out, a 4-syllable word. I should perhaps have written 'estu'ries', which is the rather lazy way in which I have usually pronounced the word, and the way I usually hear it. Best wishes, Tony
