Amen on that one . No student not behind should be the slogan. it seems to me,almost this commercialization of education. Big big bucks for the "college industry" get em earlier and earlier into their system, kind of in the same way the retail stores start setting up for christmas earlier and earlier. Ive often wondered , given the overall dumbing down of the American kids, if they actually dumb down the SAT and ACT tests every year so the college system doesnt lose to much potential clientele. Maybe I'm just too cynical. Your pc. was a pleasure to read, and it is SO nice that there are still teachers like YOU out there. God Bless and good luck.

Thank you , There are so many of us that would enjoy teaching more if we could test less and teach more.

Hooray for you for making good sense in telling it like it should be. It is sad that you're talking into the wind,
I'm sorry to say you won't be heard by the people that can change things.
I fought the system for 20 odd years, sorry to say I lost
my three sons survived and are doing well but I'm sure they
missed some of the joys I had growing up it is a sad sad situation

You , unfortunately , are so right. In fact the legislation keeps acting as it if is the teachers fault that students don't want to come to student. Luckily, I teach Choir and get the students who are motivated. I loved your sincere review.

What a great story told in a touching manner. I remember the days you described and I'm a teacher now. The Florida FSA starts in 3rd grade here as well -- but if they pass 3rd grade, but fail the reading FSA, they get left back. So their first major test has a major consequence.

Keep sharing your insight. While your point of view was obvious from the beginning, it was not heavy-handed and you clearly describe the two time lines in such a way that anyone could come to their own conclusion.

well done.

Thank you , yes in Texas they have to pass it to be promoted, however they can retake it in the summer. What a way to ruin summer. lol thank you for your review. I so appreciate your thoughts.

This made me very sad simply because of how true it is. I enjoyed the way you provided contrast with your school years and the modern school years. It really emphasized your point.

Thank you so much. The saddest part is it is the truth. I loved high school, now kids tolerate it.

I read this and sighed, I have a Diploma in teaching and work in Long day care 0-5yrs, I so hear you. What about learning through play!
Again I agree, lets teach the children at their own developmental level, not one imposed and for goodness sake, let professionals make decisions to suit the individual child, that is what they are educated to do! Sorry I am on a rant, but I so hear you, learning can be fun. LET THE CHILDREN PLAY!

Thank you so much, I so agree. Standardized testing takes so many hours away from the love of learning.

Spot on, teachers are some of the biggest influences if they love their job. Take that away they wil still do it, but the twinkle may be gone. My English teacher use to blow up in class at me and send me to the library, he was a red head and known to have a terrible temper(Jim Briggs). Then he would come down afterward and talk about whatever book I was reading. He did it as a favor to me to get me out of what he thought was a topic of no use to let me read in silence. We often laughed about how the class thought he hated me, but he was actually one of my best friends. Teachers should have the power, not some arcane law, that is not based on the individuality of each child. Only the teachers can see what's best as they care on a whole different level. Excellent work.
Thanks no I didn't spell check;)

Sitcoms (especially the family-orientated ones) often have episodes about picking out the right pre-school for kids...social commentary. So, yes, we are starting to, for lack of a better term, groom kids for the future. Things need to change. Thank you for sharing this and expressing yourself so well. Great job.

I've given you six stars because of your bravery. I'm not going to offer corrections. Asking for forgiveness from your children is brave, but you first had to go through the hardest step - admitting it was wrong. Alcohol can do bad things, but it is still no excuse. You appear to have realised that it is still your fault. Now another hard step - forgiving yourself. And remember - many families are living in this problem, and hiding it. Your children are amazing. Well done to them and congratulations renewing your family ties. You are amazing too. Keep writing and I am sure this writing today will help many others. Thank you for your honesty.

this is an excellent write, mystery wrtier, you did an excellent job writing this story and sharing your son's feelings about the situation you were in, great imagery presented in his words, your children have very successful lives and I am glad they were able to break away from the cycle of abuse and lead productive lives. you are a strong person to share what happened to you and your family. good luck in the contest.

    Thank you so much,
At Nik''s wedding during the mother dance honor, he let me know
He picked , 'ella Fitzgerald singing Blus Skies for me"
I told him, I said, I'm sorry about the hard times he told me. " Don't worry MaMa, look at what I have become. I needed those days to become who I am. "
