Thank you for writing something you wanted "us to know" and congratulations on your second place recognition. I enjoyed reminiscing with your about high school, which I also attended in the 60's. Your use of "robots" is quite effective. Cheers- Joan

thank you so much. High school is much harder and more frustrating these days. I love teaching though and the students are wonderful.

My heart is breaking over this foolish kids today have to go through. Thank you for educating me on this.

" An annual year-end kindergarten show has been canceled at a New York school because the kids have to keep working so they will be "college and career" ready." - Are you kidding me. This is gross and a great motivation for home schooling.

I don't know if it's district, city, or what but my niece and nephew went to private school as little kids and now they are in public school and they never dealt with this foolishness. They go to school in Stamford, Ct and I don't know if that makes a difference.

These points you stated a cause for revolting out of the public school system.

thank you so much. Since I teach I know that all I have said is true. Two years ago they tried to make it 15 different tests the kids had to pass. Luckily they woke up and now it is only 5. Testing needs to be thrown away. It costs millions of dollars and proves nothing.

I agree. If Einstein were alive today he wouldn't pass any of these test because he was so advance than what they were teaching him.

I have been preaching this for years. Coming from a family of teachers; husband, son and two daughter's, and I have witnessed the changes and stresses. The joy of teaching has eroded from careers; kids are stressed, and possibly the worst behaved in decades as a result. I won't even go into the substance abuse as a result of the stress on kids. Has it ever been more pervasive? Do away with the oversaturation of testing which is making the testing companies filthy rich.

Thank you Mary. My high school students tell me how much they love to come to choir and sing. It is the one class they feel they can relax and be who they are. Get the politicians out of the classroom or make them take these tests. I have seen them, they will fail.

Well done essay. I agree with you on the way schools are being run, nowadays. I also think that kids should just be allowed to be kids. If they have an interest, they will take care of learning it on their own. Computer tech, for instance. Some kids love any kind of computer stuff and you almost have to make them go outside and play. Undoubtedly they will be fine in that area and won't have to study the stuff. Other kids could care less about it. I think you've nailed the problems with this article. My niece is a teacher and she thinks also that there is an awful lot of BS involved in the requirements.

Here are several things you might consider. Up to you, of course.
Nik who >ended up< (started?) reading late ended up graduating with honors.

Also, where you use the word suppose several times, shouldn't that be supposed? As in-- "The way the world is suppose to be."

Good essay. Well written argument.

Six Jusylee, I am glad to hear it from you, for I see the sad trend across the board! And where is it getting us globally. And, having just seen a program on the reality South Korea where the pressure is virtually on from birth, and the suicide rate in young and old extreme, I feel we all need to hear. Many sadly, like myself, not having good experiences themselves, and so consequently have little to support a new generation or two in light of.

It is good to see increasing strong growth flowering from such humus of dying mankind, can our co-creative humanity bond God's all photosynthesizing new light of life as we meet on The Way of love?

I think you have many gifts to share, and I thank you so much. Enjoy your days, Maureen*&*

Hello Jusylee. A woman of my heart. I am Danish as you now probably know, and there we don't start school before the age of seven or the earliest at six. So well written and so well said. Children should be allowed to be children for as long as possible. The rest of our lives we are never allowed. I don't know whether you know that a research was carried out in Europe some years ago, and it turns out that all children at the age of eight were exactly at the same level of reading and writing regardless of whether they had started school at five years of age or seven years of age. An interesting concept. I love your essay, and good luck in the contest. All the best. Ulla:)))

I agree, too much emphasis is placed on testing and forcing teenagers to go to college, although they may not want too. Society puts a lot of pressure on parents to encourage college after high school, I believe that has a lot to do with economics of universities making money. Many teenagers that go to college, drop out in the first year. You have written a well written thought provoking essay with a lot of truths. I agree that we should allow kids to be kids and grow at their own pace. Thanks for sharing.

thank you , if we could just get the legislature to listen. They blame the teachers.

I can relate to your story because I grew up during that era. I think that you have a nicely constructed story. I like the way you make your charaters interact.

Thank you , School is so different now. I teach choir so it is still wonderful with what the students create, but the rest is so stressful, so hard on them. I want to want knowledge, not have it pushed on them.

This is a must read for everyone with a child in school or will be going to school. I know things can never return to the way they were when we were kids but life could be less stressful if we just stopped all the pushing and the helicoptering around the children. I see this in my own grandchildren and I am trying to counsel them to be Zen. Live in the moment and enjoy this day for what it gives you. Great "rant. " You may have needed to say it, but all of America needs to hear it.

Thank you so much. I hate the stress I see in my students eyes. I am lucky . I teach them to sing in choir. Our performances are a big hit in the community. I love my students.
reply by enitsalemap on 25-May-2016
you can tell that you do. I knew we were simpatico, I am a professional singer and choir was my favorite class.

This is a beautifully written essay. I think there should be minimum standards on a national level, but the testing craze has gotten out of hand. Schools should teach the basics that are needed for students to successfully cope after graduation. Instead they are teaching how to take tests and how to do well on them regardless of whether their students really know the basis material being tested. That's what happens when politicians get involved with education.

You nailed it. Half the politicians couldn't even pass the tests. Wait until I show you some examples of whats on the test for eight year olds. Oh , Heavens.
