Your author notes, brought even more insight to your story, probably thinking about your own husband which spurred you to write this in the first place. Well my husband is 19 yrs younger than yours, and he always wants to do things past what he should, like, well.. not retiring from his full time job yet, that is very trying, even after getting a hip replacement last Fall..and though I know that keeps him younger than his years, sometimes, certain chores, etc...need to stop at an age, where, is best not to do them anymore.

God Bless you & hubby...Caressa_08

Thank you. Yep, heavy equipment is one thing older folks should NOT be driving. I was so glad when my husband finally admitted his reflexes were too slow for tractor driving. A tractor is a dangerous thing if miss-handled.

My husband & myself have a place out in the country that we hope to retire to.., over two acres only, though the grass always needs to be cut in the summer, and hubby is always doing that, on his sitting lawn mower.....I can only imagine...more land, more grass to mow, and getting on a high tractor can be yes, I would think dangerous and reflexes very important to ride one safely...Thanks for letting me know, whoever you are... about your hubby. & what he decided....C.

There is truth in this fiction. It is difficult for men to admit that they are no longer able to perform work they once did in their past. But I suppose the rigors of old age can pose problems to both genders. This is a nice reflection on a real fear. It is well-written and thought provoking.

Thank you. Yep, it works both ways. I am finding some things harder now that I am 70.

That is a tragic story. I am glad it has no basis in reality. I didn't find any errors within the story, and I wish you best of luck in the competition.

Take care,
Russell

Mystery author, good job of writing this 100 word dash for
the contest. We sure get stubborn when we get old and we
want to do the things we love best. I can definitely relate.

Thank you. You can't blame a person for not wanting to admit they are too old.

One could say this is a harrowing story but then the farmer died doing what he had lived for all his life and I expect he was happy until the end. An enjoyable read and in such a short story well done.

Thank you. No one wants to admit they are too old to do what they love.

What a short sad tale. He didn't want to give up what he loved and pushed it one more time. That is how our older ranchers were even in old age, up early take care of things every day.

Thank you. You can't blame them for not wanting to admit they can't do what they used to do. My uncle just died last week. He was 94 years old and still lived alone and drove himself everywhere. He mowed his lawn the day before he died. Amazing, I hope I do as good.

I enjoyed both the story and your comments about it as well as the picture. The entire story is well-written and, considering the brevity that had to be implemented, I thought it was excellent.

Thank you. I'm so glad my husband finally admitted he doesn't have the reflexes to drive farm equipment anymore. We live in farm country and I have heard of several tractor related deaths.

A tragic farm story really seems appealing for me since it throws light on old age and dreams left for them. I like the way you comprised this tragic death to a handful of words. Good work.

Thank you. The one thing about so few words is one must leave out so much good narrative. I do my best with these short stories.

Thank you. My brother-in-law was 86 and got killed while driving farm machinery. Not the same situation, but close. I'm so glad my husband quit the tractors.

Well-told story. So happy it wasn't true.

You said so much in just those few words. Good job.

I can relate to your husband. A few years ago (70 years old), after hip surgery, I defied my son and climbed on a ladder, using a cane, and carrying an electric chain saw. A limb came down and knocked me off the ladder, and I very nearly cut off my pinky finger. Went almost all around the finger. Lucky I didn't fall across it. Haven't lived in down yet. LOL

I enjoyed your story very much. 8-)

Thank you. My husband did get hurt by a bull three years ago. He wasn't quick enough to get away anymore. It slowed him down a lot. There again, my uncle just died last week. He was 94 and still lived alone and drove his car. He mowed his lawn the day before he died. He refused to let anyone live with him and managed just fine. Who knows?
