Judy,
This is a very touching story that reminded me of my own father, a Korean war veteran.
Your letter reads as a rough draft with thoughts out of place. You might consider opening with the golf course then your birthday conversation.
Also, check your facts. Did your dad fight in WW2, Korea and Vietnam? The Cuban Crisis?

Yes, Dad was born in 1922 Which makes him 21 or 22 during world war two. 24 in the Korean Conflict , 1945 or 46. Cuban Crisis 1962 Vietnam 1959-75 . that means he was in his late 40's when he was in Vietnam. Yes, he was in everyone of those. My facts are right. He didn't retire until he was in his late fifties, which would have been in the Eighties. He was in every one of these. I am sorry you didn't believe me. This is a true story. I do appreciate your questions. i think if someone said the same thing to me I would have questioned it. but it is true.

Judy,
I did believe your writing to be true. I meant only to point out some weak points. You skipped over Korea and went to Vietnam. The Cuban Crisis is more commonly referred to as the Cuban Missile Crisis.
I meant no insult.

This is a letter I would be honored to have representing us (the citizens) as part of a war memorial. This is precious and so tragically true. How the men were just men, until the war changed them. Made them...something else. Not BAD, but different. And something they were almost afraid to share with the rest of us. Great writing. Bless your soul.
I STRONGLY recommend you submit this somewhere for the fourth of July celebrations. Even if it's to your local paper. Submit it. Now!

A well-written story, clear and logical, well-organized. The stage is well-set and feelings come across loud and clear.
Some details need attending to:
"Twenty First Birthday" twenty-first birthday?
"B Fifty Two" (B-52)?
not-so-nice grandmother? (hyphens)?
"divorced man"? (no caps)?
"or should I say, wars." (comma before wars)
"not approachable" unapproachable?
Interesting story. All in all, a very good job.

War has changed many a veteran. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very good read. There is very good imagery.

How little we appreciate of our parents' lives when we are small, especially when they have been to war. Few speak openly of their trauma to their family and it can take quite a while to piece together the story. This is a wonderful tribute, Judy.

Thank you so much. I am trying to add a picture of him, but it says it is in the wrong format. Am I doing something wrong?
