This is an excellent entry into the Penning Hope contest. You have rhymed this poem perfectly and relayed a message of strength and hope in times of despair. This is a cleverly composed piece. Best of luck in the competition and thank you for this inspiring read. ~DD

Thank you so much. I truly loved it. I walked home from school every day singing and wishing the doors would open and everyone would come out dancing the same steps. That is how I imagine the girl in the picture to be.

Your poem does what all good poetry should do in my opinion and that is to force the reader to use their imagination. A poem that is filled with hope.

You capture well the abstract concept of hope. It's what makes a body want to survive even in the worst circumstances. The use of a specific incident like the potato drives home the theme. The closing lines are so powerful.

Simply beautiful in presentation and content. The photograph so gripping when coupled with the words of the concentration camps. Hopeful in spite of the stench of death and inhumanity killing hope one murder at a time. Excellent.

Wow,

Judy, this is terrific. I am a 'fan' of all holocaust writings so this is a great inspiration for the hope contest. Good luck!

Very favorite lines:
If evil comes and takes the sun
with all the death it brings
I hope that I will be the one
who stands up tall and sings

I can imagine the strength it would have taken for someone to write these feelings. Well done. You should be very proud of your work here.

Well said, but I like the dancer who threw her shoe in the SS sergeant's face and grabbed his pistol and shot him as they drove her and her friends into the gas chamber. Francesca Mann, Birkenau, Oct. 1943...
