Faith is taking the word of others who teach of things unseen, and it is
rare that the dove flies. But each has to build his faith of blocks that he
knows. A piece of cake Found prompt to launch an essay on faith. Excellent.

This is a deeply moving story of your grief and ability to maintain your faith. The white dove soften the heaviness of this and was a beautiful image of faith and hope. Good luck in the contest. Chris

I have a very strong belief and faith in God. In your story it took the fate of your grandson, Connor, to finally lash out at God. Just human nature as we are taught about His love. We ask why? But most times, we get no answer. Your sign from Him was the return of your white dove friend.

In the last eleven years, I have been knocked down in all but three years. I get back up to thank God for His help. I have been a breath away from dying, but always seemed to find my way back. I have never asked God why me. No reason to because I am still here.

This is an excellent contest entry and I wish you good luck.

Thank you for sharing this.

What a depressing story, and worse yet, it's true. I don't know how you endured all the deaths. You say God gave you a sign that He's still there, but then he let your grandson die anyway. What kind of God does that? No wonder you were angry! If that's a merciful God, I have news for Him. I'm far more merciful that He is!

Wow -I'm thinking there's a lot of non-fiction is this "flash fiction" piece. Is the part about the dove true? Either way, I've always been amazed at the steadfastness of your faith in light of all the trials you've been through. It's an amazing witness.

I love the conversational style of this one. From the opening line, you draw the reader in as if you're a friend telling a story (which you are).

A powerful piece - there is probably no deeper human experience than grief and you capture that depth perfectly here.

Hi there,

This is a well written piece, although a little predictable I think. faith is a wonderful thing, but I always wonder what happens when that faith doesn't bring the desired result. that's when faith gets 'rationalised' I think.

Good entry for the competition and I think you made great use of the paragraph / sentence that was the inspiration.

All the best

I can imagine that happening. My husband and his sister died of cancer leaving young children. My parents-in-law were devastated, yet two years later, my father-in-law was taken by cancer. I have lost twelve of my family to cancer. Your story is excellent, we do test God, we have doubts when these things happen, especially when it is to our children. Well done, well written, and good luck in the contest. xsx Sandra

Wonderful bit of musing and eventual discovery of the power of the Lord.
If only he would give such obvious signs to all those in need.
The beautiful thing about a sign like that is that, no matter what happens, you know that he's got the whole situation in his hands
