hmmm I really like the moral to your story poem. I love stories with a moral. It's a feel good poem in non rhyming verse. Thanks for sharing with us and good luck in the contest

Thank you. The story was hard to find. The contest gives you a picture to write about. I didn't feel any connection with the picture, but then I thought, Book, ship. Moby Dick, and the story wrote itself. Thank you.

A powerful story, Judy, not just about prejudice but about the joy of language. My uncle, who was a newspaperman, always used to tell me that his dictionary was his bible and, with a twinkle in his eye, he would remind me that, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Unlike his father, he was an atheist. My grandfather was a vicar. Perhaps he used to sermonise too much at home! However, he used to read Spenser's Faerie Queen to me from about the age of five, and developed in me a great love of language and the mystique of strange words.
I very much like the way you have constructed your free verse poem to show how the power of the word can overcome prejudice. It is, as the saying goes, mightier than the sword. Martin Luther King is remembered as much for his words as his actions, and they live on to inspire a whole new generation. Of course, in the hands of a good orator, it can also do much harm.

What a wonderful review that I will cherish. I love the back ground story that you gave me about your uncle. Also the connection to Martin Luther King. You took the time to give me a heartfelt response. Thank you so much.

Hello mystery writer, at first I was put off by the length of this story. But in the end read it twice. You describe an interesting story of an old black man who had brains enough to teach a young boy to improve his reading.

Good work and the best of luck with it... ~Mel~

Thank you so much. Yes, I think it is great that the story is about prejudice, intelligence and the desire to learn. Thank you for reading it twice.

This might be a heroic adventure; two kindred spirits joining together, to explore one of the greatest texts ever written and to explore life together. Those two souls joined forces to discover truth and wisdom and to grow through. The experience. Thus inspired, our poet presents us with some masterful poetry and a tribute to Moby Dick. -Ekim777

Thank you so much. It was great discovering this story. When I first got my picture from the contest I had no idea what to write. But I made the connection to the book Moby and the rest of the story wrote itself.

This poem told such a story, it moved me. How kind "old Jimmy" was
despite his bad treatment, in the end it will be kindness and respect for
anyone different from ourselves that will win the day. Very well written, and you deserve the 6.

Thank you so much. This challenge was very different and at first when I got the picture to write about for the contest I was stumped. Then I tried to make a connection between the book in the picture and the ship. That is when this story developed. Thank you so much for reading it and I will cherish the six stars.

Oh, wish I had a six to give. A wonderful, heart warming tale, and sadness, when the grandfather dies. Though so true to life, and I believe it might possibly be true, or a similar story probably did occur

Best Wishes for your entry & enjoyed the read...Caressa_08

I love what you did with this picture for the contest! Incorporating Moby Dick into it was genius. 'sail into the words' is my favorite part. Thanks again for entering the contest.

You so made my day. I wanted to enter this contest but when I saw the picture nothing came to me. But then I looked at the book under the boat and thought Moby Dick. Then I looked up vocabulary for Moby dick. Oh, my heavens there are so many words there that I didn't know. Then the story was born.

I really enjoyed this unusual wandering story. I liked the message - and whoever told the boy that the book (Moby Dick) would change his life -- was sure right! *smile* Great fun. Good luck in the contest!
