We still hang our clothes, if it's raining, under the back verandah, both my daughters hang their washing, and the only time I saw one of my daughters use a drier was when she lived in New York in a penthouse apartment, that was a brief five years. It must be an American thing, well done, good writing, blessings Roy
Typo : Echoed through my mind (was) two pulleys...

Thank you, Roy. I?m sure many Americans hang clothes just depends where one lives.
Thanks for reading and sharing! Always appreciated.

Well written. Good work.
There's been a lot of discussion of late about exactly 'when' were the 'good old days' with someone quick to point out the evils of whatever era is identified.
I think it has more to do with an individual's personal growth and development that with society as a whole - like in your story.
Best wishes.

Our good old days would differ for someone of a different age, I would guess.
    Thanks for reading.

Virtual six for this precious story, John. I so enjoyed this and the memories that stirred inside of me. My mother hung out our wash because we didn't have a dryer. I loved the smell of the fresh air on our sheets, and in my sun-dried clothes. There is nothing quite like it. The only problem was when it rained...!

Sending along my very best to you and yours as always, Sal :))

Oh my god! I don?t know that happened. Please forgive me, yes, a virtual six. I will go and fix it now. I?m so embarrassed?.

Sally, I know it?s an honest mistake! Auto words. It gave me a good laugh like I said. No harm, no foul?

Hi John,
It is lovely to know that although so much changes in our modern world some still stay the same.
A pleasant walk down memory lane.
Thanks for sharing

I enjoyed your story, John. You shared it in an
inviting way. Memories are important to all, and
it's nice to revisit them. I've never heard a chirping
sound like you mentioned. Thanks for sharing that
interesting tidbit. The woman seemed happy with her
chore of hanging out the clothes--a great memory
for her.
Thanks for sharing, Jan

When I was growing up, my mother hung our clothes out on the line. It was well before dryers came into existence, at least for ordinary folk like us. When I got old enough, I helped her. I can recall days when the clothes were frozen stiff. A few years ago, before I moved to the city, I hung my clothes on the line. We didn't have a dryer. Now I have a dryer. I love the smell of clothes hung out in the fresh air--there is nothing like that scent, but I wouldn't want go go back to lugging my wet clothes out ... still, the memories smell like summer breezes and flowers.

This is well written and takes us back to a simpler time. I remember my mom putting clothes on the line to dry. It was always fun to run between the rows. In some areas I think they've even put rules that you cannot hang clothes any more because it looks cluttered or something.
You did a great job including sensory imagery with the sound of the clothesline leading the way to the discovery. The little lady does what she knows to do. We had a neighbor that still had a wood burning stove until he passed about five years ago. He never did get a gas or electric range. He was used to chopping the wood.

There are towns here in New Jersey which deny the use of clotheslines for the reason you said.
Thank you, Debi for reading. I appreciate you and your time.

You built this story well, setting the scene and explaining your reasons for being in the old neighborhood. This well crafted story is delightful and entertaining, and brings back memories to readers of a certain age. Being that age, I truly enjoyed this post.

My goodness, you foreigners! Fancy not hanging your clothes outside in the cleansing sun and breeze! Imagine all the germs lurking in your dryer after a few years, not to mention the cost of the electricity. Also, what if your cat sneaked into the dryer and was dried to death!
