TRUE WORDS. If a reviewer doesn't like a review they SHOULD NOT REVIEW IT. Poet says writers shouldn't give bad reviews like averages or doors. Tone one of strong conviction. liberty justice

Thank you for your exceptional review, Liberty. And, isn't that why we bother to write--so we can express ourselves freely? That's what it's all about. Marilyn

BEASPEAS,
Bravo! Another blow struck for freedom of speech! Wouldn't it be great if there were "Skip it!" buttons in life that enable us to press it when confronted with undesirable situations and then just walk on by. Perhaps there are and I don't always see them or, worse yet, don't always exercise my prerogative to pres them.

Good message, eloquently presented.

Keep well.

Hi GMF. Thank you for your review. This censorship poem was sparked by the view of some that writers have no business expressing controversial topics. I disagree. If we don't like another writer's content in a piece--just skip it. Sadly in life, there is no "skip" button and we have to deal with it. Marilyn

Excellent and timely after I recently reviewed another short chapter on a "poison pen" FanStory reviewer. Being new to FanStory, I am quickly learning the ropes and intricacies involved with both being a reviewer and reviewing. No one minds a critical review if it comes with clear suggestions for such and examples of improvement, but the vague messages that accompany lower scores without representation serve no purpose and cause the writer to wonder ... I joined to be critiqued for my craft and hopefully improve.

Hi Mary. First of all, welcome to FanStory. I think you will like the site and make some good friends. My best advice to you it to never award less than five stars because it hurts the writer's stats and they will resent you for it. Despite the suggested star-rating system, I always give five and make suggestions. What did Mary Poppins say? "A little bit of sugar helps the medicine go down? Many people on the site just want to have fun and don't care one iota about meter, yada, yada. They just want to express themselves. Basically, I fall into that category myself. Then there are those who want to be top banana. I say to those people--"go for it."
Yes, recently there has been a ruckus about suppressing content of writers' works because some MAY deem it to be politically incorrect. Well--my goodness--we all have the right to freedom of speech. My poem is addressing that issue. Write on, I say. Don't let others squash you. If a reader, reviewer doesn't like a piece, skip it. I have the option, if I don't want to read it--I can skip it. Write what you want, believe what you want, but I don't have to agree with it. I told someone I didn't agree with them and they thought I was judging them. Don't judge me and I won't judge you. Your poem says a lot.

Hi Joyce. I hardly ever read political rants because everyone is entitled to his/her opinion--but, I don't have to read it. I try not to rate on content. That is the writer's voice--not mine. This poem is about content. Everyone has the right to express his/her opinion, but I have the right to skip if I want. Hi MaryMarilyn

You have put a good perspective on the evaluation process. I think writers are a little thin-skinned when it comes to criticism because so much of ourselves goes into each chapter, or poem, or essay, or script. On the other hand a good evaluation is very valuable for growth as a writer. The responsibility is really with the reviewer to be thorough, honest, (but not always too honest), and helpful. If a reviewer doesn't feel qualified or knowledgeable enough about a piece there is an easy solution, skip it. Incidentally in line 6 were needs an apostrophe, we're.

Hi Mary. Thank you for noticing that typo and I will fix it. I never cut and paste a review or response to one, but I will cut and paste my answer to you about how I feel about content and reviewing since I think it is so important and too lengthy to retype it. Here is how I feel about all that:

Everyone has a right to an opinion, everyone is allowed their freedom of speech. Your poem is great, you have expressed your opinion quite clearly. Evi

Thank you, Evi. This is written on the subject of content. I always feel if we write for ourselves, if it is not acceptable to others, they can simply pass it up. Marilyn

Six stars from me as I still have some to give and like to encourage meaningful, life enhancing work. Especially honest, self defining work presented with such creative, constructive zest!

Well done, Marilyn! With such an abundance of creative choice, I really can't understand artistic soul spending valuable time focussed on work of another that cannot lead to the enhancement of both lives. And, I am blest in my short journey of FanStory by the wonder of learning and relationships built up through the precious process; although I can imagine the increasing difficulty of having the one assessing structure for novice inexperienced writers, and even more inexperienced, uneducated reviewers, like my myself! Moreover, with very specific and limited personal goals for this learning journey at present, I struggle with the need just give five stars to the many multi-talented experts whose work I value enjoying and may want to share thoughts on, complement, but have no basis on which to judge it as a work of categorised art.

But then such is the amazing miracle of this journey and its growth for me, and I thank you for inspiring, nourishing and supporting it's beauty.

And, as the days are speeding by I'll take this opportunity to say: happy Easter and many resurrections of love, laugher, and the precious delight at meeting the Christ child in everybody and soul! Blessings, Maureen*&*

Thank you so much for your wonderful review, Maureen. We have to feel free to write what's important to us without fear of negative comments from others. I guess we all have trouble with our weekly quota of six stars. There are so many good writers here, it's hard to decide who to award them to. I do appreciate yours. Marilyn

Yes! And I truly appreciate the increasing depth of your sharing and mentorship, plus the inspiration of your work. We are truly well blest.
However, big family events and growth are priority for me until after Easter; therefore, just a trickle of poems and rather long delays in replying and reviewing. I am at Port Fairy for a long weekend and wedding. Next weekend in the opposite direction for a 30th wedding anniversary! And, my English sister and brother-in-law are visiting.
Blessings, Marilyn and a hug, Maureen*&*

Somehow I missed this controversy until tonight. I agree--if you don't like, don't read it. Aren't we adult enough to do that? I agree that there should not be censorship here. Will written, my friend~Debbie

Hi Marilyn ...

I couldn't agree with you more! I am not in favor of censorship. If I don't like what someone writes, I just move on, leaving no comment. As you said in your notes, no one is going to change his/her mind based upon anything I, or anyone else here, says.

Some folks, though, just have to have their say. Even though it might be ugly, I allow them the privilege to post their views without my objection. I just wish they could be a little more savvy and considerate with their comments. It's only respectful of other writers. Everyone, on both sides of an issue, should be able to speak their piece ... just use a little adult decorum when you do. After all, you get no more respect than you give.

Hugs ...

Alan

You hit the nail on the head, Alan. I agree with you. A version of the golden rule. What you want for yourself you have to be willing to allow for others. If I don't like or agree with content, I pass it by. Some object to content and want censorship of some topics. Who would decide what is postable and what is not? To squelch diversity of expression would make this a boring site. Marilyn

I agree if you don't like what you read rather skip than to bring someone down to blow your own horn. I never mind constructive comnents, but some are plain nasty and that is uncalled for.

I agree with you, Sandra. I'm not talking about reviewing. The censorship I'm talking about here is preventing writers from posting their beliefs because others may not or don't agree with them. Everyone should be able to post their thoughts without being shut down. Marilyn
