As much as I love your poem, I love your Author's Notes even more. This is the ESSENCE of how I see you: you speak your peace, always respectfully but with candor, and anyone who's offended, well, that's on them.
This is an excellent poem about the tragic lives of these women who are regarded as possessions - but value-less ones. It's here in this country, as well, of course, just without the burkhas. Women's shelters are full of them.
Excellent read.

I don't think anyone should apologize for their opinion. As long as you aren't spewing hate or inciting violence towards someone, stand firm in your beliefs. Thank you for this. I forgot I even wrote this. Gretchen

Wow this piece is so revealing. It has such emption and compassion.
I like the reference to "clothing changed...eyes...downcast."
This struck me.
This opens thoughts as to WHY?
"Bruises...fresh canvas" These are potent words of description.
And finally ...
"... And sees the sun"
Let us pray ...

This is hard-hitting and spot-on. I see such pain in those flat eyes behind the berkas (not sure of spelling). I hope as you do, that the injustice will end.
Your poem is really good.
God bless and all my best for your new year.

Definitely not offensive to me. I am with you. Women are used as sex objects and men often use the word of God to treat women like toys and subjects of obedience to them, their masters. How sad it is!
This is a timely poem speaking for the women under such oppression. Good on you, my friend. May God bring to light the horrors on how oppressed women really are especially in certain parts of the world. You paint the picture well.

Whoah now that's heavy. Speaking of a tortured woman who is a follower of her master and bows at his every command. Verses dictate she is waiting and plotting to be free one day. liberty justice

Hi there,
Yes culture hides a multitude of sins, much like religion. Of course, there are those who believe in this and actively seek it. To each their own.
A finely written, thought provoking piece.

Hi, Gretchen.
This is a strong important poem and well penned. We're so fortunate to live in countries that respect women's rights and freedom. You showed so well another side of existence, not a happy one, but where women are trapped, caged behind clothing and subservient. I really like the way you've ended the poem.
Happy New Year!
Bye

If this offends any (man) then he doesn't belong on Fan Story as far as I'm concerned.
You did a good job with this piece, it's direct and honest and, sadly, oh so true. Hugs, Lou

Although there are many battered women in the US, most women have it very lucky having in the US compared to many women of Third World nations. Thank you for sharing this and bringing it to light.

I don't know how those women stand the life they have to live. If they are lucky they have a kind man who truly loves them. Still they are deemed to be less than human.
Well done Gretchen. Happy New Year my friend. Nancy
