I'm like you, Gretchen. Since my husband passed away six years ago, and I had to find homes for his 'precious' posessions, I realise how little they mean. I've given all my jewellery to my daughter, with the exception of a Princess Diana type sapphire and diamond engagement ring she has always coveted (might as well give her something to look forward to when I die!) My husband's love letters await my son, and everything else can be binned or sold!

It's so good to see you writing again - keep it up!

Nice collection, I think I have to pick mine and have them tucked in some of ornate box like yours. I enjoyed reading your memories and you inspired me to do mine too. Thanks for sharing.

There's a lot to be said about sentimental value. Its the little things that bring us joy. Plus I share your distaste in ordinary jewelry (I'm not dumping money on a diamond anytime soon), so this appealed to me as well. Good job.

How very true - 'some badly made knick knacks' or the 'beautiful faces of my family ' our thoughts are indeed the lenses through which we view the world for good or ill - well presented here

As a mother and grandmother, I too have special "jewels" that I have received over the years that are my greatest treasures. Each piece brings back a flood of memories of times gone by. And as you point out, those gifts are more precious than all the fabulous jewelry in the world.

This is an excellent read and one I can identify with.

Blessings to you,
Linda

I understand exactly how you feel about your treasures. I enjoyed reading your piece and had to smile about the key being swallowed. (although not the poor child having to go through surgery)
My daughter swallowed a penny. It eventually 'came out' and became the lucky penny.
These precious items can never be given a monetary value. You can not buy memories.

I think your box is a treasure trove of delightful memories. And every mother should have one of those. I like jewellery, but can't afford much, but I tend to agree with you, those precious items in your box were forged with love and care--and are the most valuable of all.

I think every mother has a few priceless pieces of jewelry and presents that are only valuable to MOM. I enjoyed reading your essay on memories. It reminded me of my keepsakes.

Yes, I'm fully aware of the nature of treasures. I'm thinking, though, that you don't name your children. I think your piece might take on added warmth if you identified the people you love.

Just a thought.

Peace, Lee

There are rocks that he brought me when he went to visit his dad. When he put those specially picked bits of gravel in my hand, they became precious gems.--Because you made this a new paragraph, 'he' is sort of an orphan pronoun. I know you're talking about your oldest, but, maybe a name would be helpful?

Hahaha. I had to laugh because I have a jewelry box that is a beautiful piece piece of furniture. It has drawers and a lift top and the sides open to hang long necklaces etc. I'm not a jewelry person either and my Jewelry box is full of just such things. It is a memory box and a key keeper. LOL Good job Gretchen. Hugs. Nancy
