Verrry good piece, with so much truth in the message. Heroes are not men without fear, as you point out. They are ordinary people like any of us, who get past their fear to save a life or win a battle (saving many). One without fear can't be a hero. Superman can't be hurt, so he's hardly a hero. Nope, just ordinary folks rising to a challenge, not letting their fear hold them back from doing what needs to be done. Those are the heroes. :)

Excellent You have captured the soul of a hero. Someone has said,' A hero is not someone who isn't afraid and charges into battle. What bravery is there in that. A hero is someone who feels fear and still charges in.

You got it! I think you are the first one who really understands what I was trying to say. I also think that no one plans to become a hero. They are just reacting to the circumstance. Thank you so much for your kind and generous review.

I really like how smoothly all the words flow in the first two stanzas, and the message you convey, but the last stanza seems to take more of a negative outlook on heroes. Why is this? I'm genuinely curious because I really like this poem overall.

Most people who are heroes don't call themselves that. They usually don't plan on being one, it is in response to a situation that makes them what they are. Thank you for reading.

What an interesting sentiment, a hero cannot be created but rather is or isn't by virtue of being born heroic. Unfortunately, I must disagree, we are presented with opportunity in.life to adopt the heroic role. The moral challenges we are presented with are one such example. We feel, we hear, we see the world before us and we must choose who we are in it. Taking the stoic stand is a heroic deed. A well constructed piece.

I don't believe heroes are born. I believe they are made by rising to an occasion and doing what needs to be done. Thank you for your feedback.

So lovely and true, heroes are usually the people we least expect, and sometimes they even surprise themselves. A wonderful poem, blessings...

A very well-written poem and tribute to real heroes that put their lives on the line to assure others lives are safe. Heroes have a special inner strength.

I thought this was a lovely free verse poem about a subject that no one goes out to be none of us can tell a hero from anyone else till it happens. We may never be a hero ourselves or at least plan to be but who knows.

I normally would have given this piece only four stars because it does not conform to traditional free verse. Free verse normally doesn't rhyme - yours does. It also is indifferent to meter, but a free verse poet, like Walt Whitman, might use some repetitious words or phrases, or strategically placed commas to simulate a kind of meter. Your work has a conspicuous absence of punctuation. But I don't know what the contest is looking for, so I will give it the fifth star because the theme is very good. Thanks.

Quite frankly if it's not necessarily a man in the field of battle, but there have been many heroes who died for what they believe, a bucket load of Christians are dying today. of which Jesus was the greatest by far, "Greater love has no man, than a man who gives his life for a friend." John 15:13. Mothers and fathers who sacrifice for their children. But well done beautifully written in articulate and with a good flow to the narrative, with some affective varied rhyme, well done, blessings, Roy
