You are right, this is an interesting photo. One thought I had was, wow look at all those cars, and that's just one junk yard. So many people, the mass of humanity, and all their discards - what can we do with it all? You bring up interesting points in this esssay. One line stands out to me in particular: "they live eternal in the etching, however subtle, left in our psyche". That is a beautiful line, that is poetic and descriptive. Good food for thought here in your essay!

Thanks so much for your time in reading and your kind comments. The thought you shared about the debris we leave in the wake of our existence made me stop and think as well!

A very interesting short commentary. Yes, I agree life is what we make of it. When I looked at the different cars, I feel a story behind each model. Well done.

Extremely well-written. Insightful, tight and concise prose. Great visualization and reference to the photograph. Clear message, with overtones of an appeal to the reader.... to make choices that will benefit their lives.

Reading this piece reminded me why I fell in love with prose. I thank you for that. The examination of something so simple as a stretch of broken-down and rust-covered cars turned into such a profound piece about the course of life is something only a skilled wordsmith could produce. It's full of truths, as well. Thinking of my last two vehicles (the only two I've ever had, as I am only 20 years old), I think about the adventures, the life changes, the defining moments that are associated with my little Ford Ranger and my P.O.S Mercury Sable. Good writing does exactly that: makes the reader ponder, reminiscence, remember, as well as forget. Thank you for sharing this piece, it was a joy to read.
I wish I had not used up all of my 6-star reviews yet, as this piece truly deserves all 6 stars. Unfortunately, you and I will both have to settle for 5 stars-I hope you're not too disappointed :P

Thank you very much; your kind words are worth far more than 6 stars! My grandson is an excellent photographer and I've been pitching him on the idea of working together to produce a book of photos that tell a story. This was my first piece with that goal in mind. Again, thanks. ann

I would be very interested to see a collaboration between you and him, if his photography skills are on the same level as your writing skills! I look forward to reading more of your work.

Very well done. Great topic with good examples to support your message. I never thought about it as you obviously do, but there ARE stories that go along with used and discarded items of all sorts. Thanks for waking me up to all the possibilities.... good way to find story topics. :)

very nice piece that helped restore my faith in humanity.
change to auto-related
the story I heard has haunted me since: I'm was still expecting to hear "a story" at the end even after you told me it was all the stories, just craving gossip.
that's what I love about pictures that tell a story. delete "that tell a story"
The list is an endless litany of what makes every life unique and, at the same time, identical to every other life. just beautiful!

Thanks for your time in reading and your helpful comments. I will re-read with 'that tell a story' to understand the effect of removing that phrase. ann

What a wonderful way of looking at life! Our lives are definitely colorful, past and future. You did a great job at telling the possible stories of many lives through the wrecks of the past. Well done

Very insightful. Thoughts to ponder. We can only live for today as the arrow of time only moves forward.. To bad the world has a chemical reaction called oxidation, the king of rust making...

An interesting commentary. I'm not sure it sets me alight, but it is certainly well written.

One SPAG. (Square brackets indicate suggested deletion):

'they live eternal in the etching, however[,] subtle, left in our psyche, individual and collective'
