They did exist, bones don't lie. A wonderful poem that reveals the mysticism of these creatures done in a unique poetic format. But they were too dumb to survive, killing each other off. Man has been known to do that too---wonder whether a nuclear war might give mankind the same fate? Food for thought. Well done, Tom.

    Thank you Rod. That could be, or we'll eat all the food, or destroy the atmosphere.

This is a cracking new form and particularly appropriate for developing a discourse. The villanelle in chief propound the thesis, the couplets the antithesis and the final quatrain is there for a synthesis. I am definitely going to give one of these a try soon.

Reading this was such a pleasure as I love metered
work and especially those written with repeating
lines. I see the similarity to the villanelle. An interesting
topic to broach for I have never doubted that these
very large animals existed when the earth was new.
That doesn't interfere with my belief in God. We
were an after thought...We came when He said let
there be man...

Excellent poem. Another that I hadn't heard of.
I don't know if they existed or not. I tend to believe they did. I only know I don't want to run into one in my lifetime. LOL Good Job. Nancy

1.) Though stories have been lost in (history's?) mist.
--> (and repeated again later)

2.) For yes, their very bones proclaim the truth.
Lived Dinosaurs in planet's early youth.
--> very nice! *smile*

Tom,

I am always astounded by your talent and versatility! This is a good poem about the dinosaurs - perhaps I don't love it as much as a poem, say, about a -- four-leaf clover...? or a rose? -- but I don't understand how you can write such a LOOOONGG one! (You'll notice that IF I write a 'form' poem, it's SHORT! That's because I'm a CHICKEN!)

I love the repeating lines, and you have chosen well. Great job with this one!

    Thank you Robyn . I capitalized history's intentionally, treating it a a proper name of an identity. I like the challenge. It stretches my brain.

"religious" is the proper way to spell that word, not with an "e" as in your notes. Poem depicts very cute little critters, and the discovery of new species of dinosaurs is indeed a very pleasant thing. Well written and informative.

HI Treishel, I genuinely enjoyed your poem as I am in addition impartial to the creatures of the past. I haven't ran into your work for quite some time. Your poem was neatly formatted and yes, we can't dismiss the artifacts. I'd like to invite you to my latest post, "The Sixth Sphere: UFO's." which mentions creatures of the past except that you mention the land creatures, my story is about something lost at sea. Anyways, only if you're interested, no obligation my friend. I genuinely enjoyed your write. Cheers.

Tom,
I thought I recognized the form, and then you put the couplets in, so I was pleased to see that I wasn't completely wrong. lol
Just sort of. lol

I enjoyed this, and your author's notes, which made me laugh... I like that... don't 'believe' in dinosaurs... those are the same people who 'don't believe in divorce' and 'don't believe in mental illness' or 'don't believe in abortion'... guess what? they exist... the way people throw around words... Perhaps they don't agree... but they DO exist... they DID exist... like it or not... Now... let them PROVE the existence of their god... ;) then they get all bent out of shape

but that's another thing altogether.

lol
Well done Tom, I enjoyed it.

Hello, again, Mr. Prolific. It's hard to imagine there are folks who believe in such conspiracy theories. Thank you for teaching us about this variation on the Villanelle form. I enjoyed the alternating, rhymed couplets and tercets, punctuated by the final quatrain and repeats for emphasis. More cheers- Joan
