Your story fits within the necessary criterion.
It was a good read that I enjoyed and identified with. That is a good thing.
I didn't see any flaws that need correcting.

Be it movies or books, artistic talent is a combination of genius and sweat. Everything has been said before just as virtually everything has been filmed. It is not what you say, but how you say it. Just as there were/are books that are more literary, there were/are also films that are much deeper than mere blockbuster formula. Interesting essay though the contest calls for flash fiction. The door slammed- you start in the past tense, and all else occurs in the present. It would probably read better in the past tense.

How hard it is to wait on the fate of your book! I can imagine that I would be pacing in that situation.

You are correct about the reading/movie audience of today. I know I bought a book at the grocery store last week and the clerk at the checkout stand said he read it. He thought it had too much description though and wished it just stuck to action. I bet he will like the movie better.

This is an insightful and well written essay. Thank you for sharing.

Great essay that resonated with me as a writer. "The reader today gravitates to the movies faster than to the book store." The video game industry is even larger than the film industry. You are not going to find many gamers who are readers of literature.

One spag. Add a period after Flaubert.

We as writers must keep plugging away at our craft and sharing it with any willing readers we can find. I will not get millions to read my work. I focus on touching people's lives one poem, story, or book at a time. Thank you for touching me with your essay and I wish you success in the contest.

A very interesting piece. I read it with much interest. I totally agree, it is sad that the written page is being phased out by technology. Watching a movie just isn't the same as spending days with your favourite book.
I noticed a few things you may want to look at. Just my observations. Hope some of it is useful.

-in a world that highly-values analytical thinking - I was wondering if it is some artistic expression to put a hyphen between highly and values. Personally, I wouldn't have it there.

-The movie(no comma) feeds the need to

-"Harry Potter," - comma behind the speech marks "Harry Potter",

- or - Tolkien's books - why the dash behind or?

Thanks for a very entertaining read. All the best in the competition :)

Creative way of handling The Door Slammed prompt. Not many would have thought of relating it to a discussion of artistic talent. The movies certainly compete for the public's attention, but an impressive number of kids read the Harry Potter books despite the difficult vocabulary. Movies any more are all about the special effects, rather than story-telling. Your nostalgia for books seems to prevail, according to your comments in the last part of this. I wish more people would maintain a devotion to the written word, as you have. judi

I can feel the persons tension as they wait outside the door for a decision. All those random thought going through her head , analysing her work and comparing it with the 'greats' or those background has brought them into contact with influential people. This may sound cynical, but it's rare for a publisher to accept someone new and as yet unknown.

Our author is chafing over nothing. Our talent is superficial and changes with the wind. It is only a mental conception. Some artists have it, others learn it by dint of effort. But if the work is not the expression of the individual soul it will ring hollow. And does it matter what medium we use as long a it comes alive. -Ekim777

I suppose it doesn't matter the vehicle we use to express our self, you are right most likely, for some reason I seem to be biased when it comes to books versus movies or the other way around. Its kind of like " my life is good but I reserve the right to complain about it"
    Thanks for reading it

This is a nicely done piece. You have reeled out some facts what makes a writing good and appealing to readers. Yes, the celluloid is fast snatching away many fans from the readership platform. Thank you for sharing.
