And a beautifully composed, well rhymed coming-of-age poem it is too, Rod. I really loved the story it shares. It's a bit melancholy, a little bittersweet...but that's what makes it so very appealing, at least for me.

Wonderfully written, Rod. I wish you all the luck in the contest with this sweet, sad story.

Lovely story in a poem full of an affair of the heart that could have been more than friendship but was only a gift of one summer. Excellent abcb rhyme, rhythm - an easy read. I have a similar history

I really enjoyed this story poem entry :) I think it'd be a contender, but what do I know about the judging lol! You described a lovely time from your past. Jaime sounds like a good friend to remember with blushes and wishes that it could have turned out different. If only... I felt like I was there seeing the whole friendship develop. Good luck in the contest.

What an adorable poem! I love the rhyme and the flow, perfect cadence, and of course the story you tell. I think we all have a thing for childhood innocence and you portray that so beautifully here, along with the little hint of something more when we had the 'kiss scene'...then, we went back to 'peas and carrots'. I love the touch of the lure she left behind. You're a seasoned poet...I love the words you choose and descriptions. Very nice!

this is the best tale I've read in a long while. Sweet, innocent...reminds me of the movie My Girl with Macauley Caulkin. Friendship can be as you describe. I saw no spag and wish you the best.

This is tremendous conversation-
"You got a suit? The lake's real warm.
I'm guessing you can swim.
I know a spot where there's a rope
that's dangling from a limb.

Your poem is OUTSTANDING! It's so much more than a poem, it's a story, and I didn't want it to end, especially with Jaime gone! I got an ache in my heart reading that part, but how touching she left you her lure, kind of like she wants you to "fish" or look for her. You rhymed the entire piece so well, and I loved the conversations, as they seem so authentic. Even if she was still there the next summer, it may not have been able to top that one when you were 14. Love it!
