I wish I had a 6. What a thoughtful and thought through poem. Your rhyme is great and your topic fantastic. English, even to those who's (whose) first language it is, is difficult to navigate many words. So very well written. I certainly can relate. Thank you for the smile also. Thank you for sharing.

It is a poem that all high school students should be required to read, and understand. Those that have English as a first language often do not understand the nuances of the language, and fail to progress in a world that requires that you understand the language, i.e., English, as a general communications vehicle, a person must know many of the words of law, medicine, engineering, advertising, and shopping.

"Free," has so many exceptions to its generally understood meaning, that one must understand content, in order to decipher the correct meaning.

The charge for "Pepsi-Free," so that one is covered, but does it mean that there is no Pepsi in it? Perhaps the use some of the contents of their other brands.

Yours is not just a poem, it is the key to any non English speaker understanding the words used are often limited, expanded, or qualified by the context.

This is an excellent poem, that actually follows as story format, and I have learned from the beginning, middle, and end.

Wow, I am blown away with your review. How very detailed and encouraging. I feel as though you are sincere and thorough, and I appreciate that in a reviewer.

You brought up several good points that I hadn't even thought of, like how even the word, "Free", can have multiple meanings and they are all related. If I would have thought of that, I would have added it.

You have certainly made my day, and I know Fez, who reads the reviews, is pleased as well. Great job on the review as a literary piece as well,

This guide of yours is invaluable
That mean surely worth damn all
And surely that should be damn nothing
I can see why you're confused and all

Then there's the rough cough and the hiccough
Both are said to plough you through
There's folk that flock around the phlox
and floc wall paper two too to

But if you think the English hard
That difficulty pails or pales
Before the the tongue spoke west of Offa's Dyke
In the country known as Wales

Or is that wails or is it whales?
And does it really matter
When if its gnats that buzz around
Why don't we have a gnatter.

Your poem and review are awesome. You really add depth to a review by creating your own poetry to the mix. Nicely done, and thanks for the review.

It was just a bit of fun really. The rough cough etc. came from a lecturer at my teacher training college who was trying to show us trainee teachers what a tough job kids had learning to read and wreite English. Pity he didn't have the benefit of your poem back then!

Hi Rhonda - this is very cleverly constructed - good rhyme and a great deal of time spent I should think coming up with all these examples which indicate just how confusing English is for foreigner learning to speak it - or even for some of the English speaking people. Seems unnecessarily difficult doesn't it? Licence and license confuses. Well done both of you - good collaboration going on here LOL.

Thank you so much, Dorothy, for the wonderful review. I think Fez has been working on the idea for a while and I just followed his lead. You are right about English being a very hard language based on all the nuances. Thanks, again,

Thanks for the review and the added poetry! I just new you could do it! We should do some tag team poetry some day with several of us. That would be a lot of fun.

You are most welcome, and yes, why not? My sincere apologies go to the Greatest Author or Poet that ever lived, God. I apologise to him because I am but a mere apprentice, trying to work in his shadow.

This is great. All teachers of English should use this when trying to teach the English language. I see no changes. I do understand all the intricacies of the confusing words. The presentation is awesome. Good job and thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the great vote of confidence. I know English is a hard language. Our own students have trouble passing State testing on English because of it. Thanks for reviewing, my friend,

Ha, ha! I must admit that I still get confused about lie and lay. They say English is one of the hardest languages to master, but I've also heard the same of Chinese. What about Nyamal?? I had four years of Spanish myself, but if a native speaker talks to me, I'm lost by the fifth word....

I understand that. Living in Texas, Spanish is a really good language to know, but I'm still at baby talk level on that.
I have also heard that English is the hardest language to learn, but I've also heard that about Chinese, too. We'll let Fez answer the one on Nyamal! Take care, and thank you for reviewing!

I for one agree with you, it is a mysterious, mesmerizing, mortifying language that can frustrate and fluster the finest of friends. :)
This is a excellent poem using the English language to perfection while thumbing your nose at it at the same time.
I'll bet this one gives the grammar nazis fits. There's no way to tell which mistakes are intentional and which aren't. Diabolical! :)
This is, hands down, the best poem I've ever read on grammar.
Excellent.

Wow, thanks for the great review. How encouraging you are, Michael, for your very detailed and thoughtful comments, and for saying that is is the best ever. That's a pretty tall order, my friend! And, yes, our language is a journey and matrix. The thumbing our noses is what both Fez and I are best at, and for giving the grammar nazis a good run for their money! Thanks again,
    Rhonda
