Hi D.
This poem is a great romp, full of fun, playing with the language. It reminded me of children's poetry or at least poetry for a child-audience. Perhaps it bordered on nonsense at times like the unrealistic observation in the following lines:

"All foreigners will leave our land, they'll jump upon a plain
or plane maybe be correct, this language is insane,
it's hard enough to here, oops! Hear I think I mean
they won't be back and certainly won't forget where they have bean. "

You praise the language and then say that it is insane. Robert Louis Stevenson insisted that verse, as he called it, must maintain its logic, despite how imaginative it was. I suppose that is the flaw I saw in this poem: it contradicted itself in places.

I know it was meant to be humorous and I did smile at times. Offered in the best spirit of criticism.
Cheers,
Laurie Keim

Thanks Laurie, and you are right, it is very tongue-in-cheek, and is designed at all levels to be so. I have co-penned it with Feral, who is known for thumbing his nose at tradition, even though he is well versed in it. I follow his lead, because, to be honest, I am a short story/novelist and am pretty basic in my knowledge of poetry.

I do appreciate you taking the time to review our writing, and for leaving meaningful comments,

Hi Rhonda. Thanks for the graceful response--you took it in the spirit it was given. I'll try to review one of your short stories in the next fortnight. Cheers

Rhonda, you and fez seem to have hit it off as a writing team.

The weird and wonderful English language certainly provides plenty of material for comment and wonderment.

This one may or not have been intended deliberately, but 'principals' near the end should be 'principles'

Steve

Thank you, Steve, for the comments. I will go back in and check. If it was near the end, it was my verses, and I wouldn't be surprised if I made the mistake. That's one I should have put in to poke fun at. Thanks,

I really enjoyed this. I have heard that English is one of the hardest languages to learn, probably because it is a conglomeration of several different languages. Even people who are born in English speaking countries, grow up speaking it, learn spelling and grammar in school, still have problems. There seems to be particular words that most have trouble with. I see many who can't seem to get their and there and your and you're right.

Thank you so much for the 6 star review. How very sweet! I tried to respond to this review last night, and the internet went down just as I pressed "send, So don't think I forgot you. I like the way you characterized English as a conglomerate language, because that is so true, and may be one important reason why people have difficulties with it. Thanks again,

I love your poem. Just keeping those words in check earned you a six star rating from me. I am however disappointed that you did not attack you're and your. Another source of anguish for those who understand the correct usage of those two words. I thank you so much for this instructive and amusing post.

Wow, yeah, that would have been a wonderful addition to the poem. My students are forever butchering that one up.
Thank you sooo much for the 6 star rating. That has added sunshine to my rainy, drippy day. I can tell that you are a very discerning person and that praise only comes when deserved, so I am very honored!

Always whimsical to see the English language in such a light. The work is fun to read and the whole structure shows form is not as important as substance.

Thank you for the review and comments, and, yes, the content is more important, which, I think, is the message of our poem, but not everyone, it seems, agrees with us on that point!

Although English is the language everyone seems to know, I can imagine that it must be very hard to learn, that's why I feel very fortunate to have English as my first language. I thought this was a fun piece to read, davisr, the rhyme worked really well and I thought that your writing flowed smoothly, I couldn't find any faults. Thanks for sharing...Jacob

Thank you, Jacob, for reading and reviewing the poem. I'm glad I'm a native English speaker, too. I sure would hate to be leaning it as an adult. I have enough trouble with it as it is.

Your poem will ring true with a lot of members, including myself. I think English is easier to write than to speak. I agree with all the examples you quoted. The picture used enhances your words. ****** virtual stars.

Hi davisr, this is a brilliantly scripted and very humourous poem my friend, the trouble is that it is so true!
It must be very difficult for others to understand the language as your wonderful poem so clearly depicts, Great!

Thank you, Eric, it is, unfortunately, true. Fez came up with the idea, and I finished his thought. We as writers are editors, too, and it doesn't hurt to poke fun at your own profession. Thanks alot/ a lot!

This is a riot, and so true. I really liked how you have purposely used the wrong word to illustrate your point. How hard can it be for someone to learn English when we can't even get it right ourselves. A wonderfully humorous poem.

Thank you so much, and I think that was the hard part of the poem - just letting go. As writers, we are also editors, and its hard to let a mistake go. Thanks for reading and leaving your comments!
