That's beautifully done and you bring out truths rarely considered, that we often undervalue things that we only come to appreciate when they are gone...particularly the people we love.

Yes, it is funny how we always remember the smiles. Her smile is an abiding memory of my mother, and my father too.
This poem is a lovely tribute to your parents, who were I suspect, very much like mine, not perfect but loving and much loved despite the differences of youth.
One verse in particular sort of hit me in the solar plexus:

In times of need, Listen!
Can't you hear their soft
voices? Disregarded in Life,
so precious now.

My dear friend, it is so good to know that you are well (I trust) and I love this poem - because it is so full of truth and wisdom.

With much love,

Juliette

Hello, Juliette! Thought I answered your kind review, but may have lost it in transition. Nice to talk to you again. I have been gone a while aiding family but in the midst of adversity, I wrote this to appease my muses. I appreciate your input, and you are one of the few who read between the lines and saw what I was really trying to say.
Love and Good Health to you, My Friend!

Hi Iris - a free verse dedicated to your parents. Thoughtful words about the memories that you now hold dear. I like the inclusion of the Hemingway quote, appropriate for this poem. Yes, we are lucky to keep them alive through memories. Warm regards Dorothy x

Hi, Irish...

- Indeed, those of us who were blessed with great parents are lucky.
- If only we realized it more when we were kids, instead o years later.
- Beautiful tribute to our parents.

Cheers & Blessings
Keep Smilin'... Jax (*:*)

Well this hits the mark......the meaning is clear and it referred me immediately to some of the accrued wisdom/philosophy that exists only in the ether now, but is no less powerful for that, and memories of bodies long gone who provided it. I love your references to imperfection....the lack of 'sentimentality' increases the resonance of your piece. I did look to offer some constructive criticism, but you waste few words, if any. I didn't understand some of the punctuation...capital for 'Weary', 'Wisdom' for example, but personally I couldn't care less....others may....
This is one of the best things I've read on here, so thanks for that!

Hi Pancho, and thank you so much! I am humbled by the Exceptional rating and your in-depth comments. You are one of the few readers who defined what I was really trying to say. Mostly write fiction but this was prompted by a recent crisis in which lessons learned long ago came back and aided me through.

Hi Irish,

Super tribute to your parents, may they rest in peace and rise with Christ in glory. We are born lucky indeed when we can look back on such precious memories, though I suspect some may not be so fortunate.

Good work.

Hello from across the pond, Patrick! I've been gone a while. Thank you for reading and your kind comments. Sad but true that many parents are just burdened by their children and do not see them as a gift from God.

So well you write the poem
Showing the link newly formed
After one that you love passes this world
How well they are part of us as well

For memories help to keep them alive
Yet true the feel of the hand on the shoulder
The whisper in the ear
The many ways they say to us

Dear, I will always be near

Thank you Dan, for reading and the stars! I am impressed by your lines, "How well they are part of us as well" and our memories do keep them alive in our hearts. I sincerely believe that our departed loved ones do stay near and help us in times of need.

Irish, I read this poem several times and each time I see so much here to like and admire. First I liked how you contrasted the youthful response to a parent's voice, care, and wisdom to the mature appreciation of the many blessings parents offer, as seen "when we pause and peer back through the mist." (My favorite line!) Throughout the poem, there is the brilliant contrasting of then and now, life and death, foolish youth and appreciative adulthood, present and absent, all of which add to the strength and vibrancy of your message. i loved how you remind us our parents are still living in our memories, as we are at last absorbing the wisdom they offered and passing it along to the next generation. I think your parents would be very proud of you right now. This is such a beautiful free verse, and a wonderful tribute to them. I hope to see more of this from your poetic mind.

I am humbled. To have all those stars from such an accomplished poet! Your insight and understanding is rare and unusual. You are one of the very few who took time to look between the lines and see the real meaning of my little work. I am not a poet in any sense of the word, but you give me the inspiration to continue my search for the reason for and the meaning of life.

this is an insightful philosophical sentiment dear irishauthorme! how we do take things for granted and understand their importance when they are gone. memories will keep you connected but even they fade in time.
thank you for sharing!
blessings!
