I enjoyed your story on aging very much. I am 71 and get told all the time I sure don't look it. You are so right about a positive attitude, and keeping active. Lots of people say age is just a number, but many things change with age.

Thanks so much for your review. Yes, change is inevitable but we still control how we view them. Hugs! Karen :-)

I love this - You're right - it is about attitude, but only partly - it's also about how you feel.
The attitude comes first though - and then determination to live life to the full. And to learn to laugh at ourselves. There's so much to do, to see, to share and enjoy.

$7.15?? You should have said you just want a seat for a few hours, not to buy the joint.

This is a great entry for the contest - good luck to you, my friend.

Margaret

What a great upbeat piece. I'm definitely with you on collecting SS at 62. Can't believe that pitiful discount. But a penny saved is a penny earned, Franklin said. Good point about the many role models out there. A breezy style with humor and positive attitude. Good luck in the contest, my friend.

G'day Karen, I'm out of darn sixes mate. I loved this and got a real kick out of it. I must admit that I didn't know who maxine was but now I do after reading your notes. Great work and good luck in the contest. Cheers Fez

I love Maxine! This piece is proof that you are only as old as you think you are. The 35 cents savings at the movie theatre made me laugh. Is that all they give off the ticket? I say fight age every step of the way!

Thanks, Mel, for reviewing. It seems from my reviews that Maxine has quite a few fans. As well she should! 8-)

I love the "voice" that comes through here is such a positive and upbeat way. Age-wise, I am right there with ya, and I couldn't agree with your attitude and philosophy more.

Your "Maxine" references add humor throughout, and your final paragraph is a well-worded, well-rounding component of your piece.

Just a couple quibbles as I was reading through: I think it is Sally Field, not Fields,
and check spelling for "skeptical."

With an appreciative laugh, I enjoyed every word of this :-)

I too remember my chagrin on first receiving my AARP card - "What? SENIOR Citizen. . .are you mad??? I still work 12 hour days, 6 days a week and never miss a good party! Senior citizens play golf and bridge. . .and eat dinner at 5:30 PM!!"

LOL. . .now, I will turn 62 next October. You can bet your bottom dollar I'm filing the minute I can (at this point I figure - get your claim in before they extend the eligibility dates!!!) AND, I never hesitate to request SC discounts!

Greatly enjoyable write :)

This is a great essay that put a smile on my face. I enjoy the line " 'how' I age is really up to me." This is the heart of your essay. Your writing is smooth, but your message of resilience is superb. Thank you for sharing. I wish you success in the contest.

Boxer Girl. Hurray for your attitude! I hate being old, but I have always looked younger and everything was going along very well for me. UNTIL, last October I had back surgery. I recovered well and I was on my way to happier days now that I had no back pain. Still in the recovery process, the doctor said you have to go for therapy. "No, I'm fine, I don't need it." Everyone has to go he said. I guess I'm a sheep in a herd!! So, I went. The therapist took my knee and shoved it up to my shoulder and pulled my leg straight out on the second visit. I haven't been able to walk since. It's been 49 days! I've gone to two other doctors and have had a procedure. (Shot in the hip that was called a surgery!!) The doctor tried to convince me he knew what would cure me!! I still can't walk without enormous pain. I'm young looking, but old trying to walk with a walker and I'm pissed.

Your story gave me a kick in the pants. If I want to get better, I better get my positive attitude back and work on trying to find a solution to my problem. Thank you for your words that made me sit up and take notice. I'm seventy-two and Maxine and I are old friends. I cut out the jokes that I like best and file them! Carole

Oh my gosh! I want to kick your therapist in the arse. I have had back issues as well and I KNOW what pain you are feeling. My first problem was a herniated disc which required surgery. It was successful and I had no more problems for about 15 years and then I had a bulging disc, which only required therapy. They were great and after four weeks, I was good. I still tweak it every now and then, but I know now to rest it and take lots of Aleve! But make sure you take Aleve with something to eat, as it is hard on your stomach. I am so sorry that you had a crazy therapist. Anyone should have known not to bend your knee up to your shoulder! Have you had another MRI done to see what damage was done? I know I am rambling on, but you stay on them until they get you fixed! 8-)
reply by Carole Rosa on 30-Mar-2015
The MRI is next, but wouldn't you think that it would have been the first thing to do. Oh well, I'm just a woman and the one in pain. What do I know??? I went to the back surgeon, who only took xrays, then to my family doctor who gave me the six pak pills and a shot in my right knee, which did nothing. This still confuses me, because it is my right leg and knee, but my pelvis bone is where the legs aren't moving. Then to the orthopedic doctor who is sure he can cure it with a shot in the hip. (I should have been a doctor instead of a writer, because as a woman, my first thought would have been to find out what the actual problem was!!!) Meanwhile, I still hurt. The therapy office is all too willing to pay my additional doctor bills. They are afraid that I'm going to sue them.

Really, I'm so angry, I don't know what to do next. I just want to go back and undo history, and we know that can't happen. Thanks for your very considerate note. I appreciate you. Carole

So glad your not dead yet we love to read your work. I like this light hearted romp of all the benefits of age. Take your social entitlements and all the discounts you can get after all we paid the taxes. A good read I think I will age disgracefully my way or the highway.
