Ah, Boxergirl, this is so good - and it echoes my sentiments exactly, except that I haven't been able to find and unleash my "Maxine" yet, even at 68. Your sense of humor is dead-on, and you've expressed feelings here that are universal to those of us "of a certain age." I sure hope you do well in this contest. This essay deserves to.

I'm not surprised this won. Not only was it beautifully written, it was on a subject many of us can identify with as the years advance. I'm totally with you regarding the attitude issue. Having reached the grand age of sixty myself, I stick my shoulders back, walk as much as I can, and feel healthier than I have for years. As you say, live life to the full and why wait for a pension we might never receive. Sadly, in the UK, we now don't get our pension until we're 67 at least, and getting it before that is not an option!

Love your essay about aging, which is a subject of interest for me. I have been a geriatric nurse for twenty-two years. I have many senior citizen friends whoa re breaking the mold of aging. They work, take up new hobbies, travel etc. I too, have taken advantage of the discounts that come with arriving at a certain age and I am more apt to speak my mind, like you describe in your essay. Excellent writing that is positive and shows that the senior years can be a happy time.

I truly liked that but don't know about that 62 thing. That's not unusual since I'm always bettin' on another horse. Great points and yes, Maxine does have her points!

Excellent writing, this. You have a very positive approach to aging, and people need that as they reach their retirement years. I enjoyed your example of the great "senior discount" the movie theater offered. Early retirement may work well for some, maybe not for all. The key is doing something you enjoy. If it's your employment, great. Unfortunately, many people are visited with health problems when they reach those "golden years," so they aren't so fun. I do enjoy your positive, uplifting approach. Citing Maxine was a great touch. judi

boxergirl: Oh, how I loved reading this! I'll soon be sixty-seven and can relate to many of your thoughts. I have to warn you, though, after age sixty-one I began to notice more aches/pains, etc. because as we age, our body ages to, wears out and is not as functional. So, while you still can do all those things you wish to do, enjoy them.

Your story is well written with dashes of reality then sugar coated with sprinkles of giggles. Thank you for reminding me that I am not alone within this aging process.

A fun look at how to grow older gracefully.
Sixty, I hear, is the new forty!
I enjoyed reading your expose on how to...

'...blank teenage stare...' What a great description - wish I'd thought of it.

Warmly,

Juliette

I love Maxine. But hold on my dear. You are still rather young, by my standards anyway. At 74, I guess I am rather young by the standards of an 84 year old. When I get into my "little old lady" mode, I just look at one of my writing groups' star writers, who is 93, still drives, writes, volunteers, and has her lovely nails done every week. She is a hoot.

Ha! Thanks, granny! I know what is keeping you young at heart is your awesome sense of humor! I cant remember if you have told me your name but would love to title you something besides "granny." 8-)

Hi Boxergirl,

This was both interesting and fun to read because you incorporated some marvelous humor throughout.

I heard about that ridiculous mistake, handing out money to dead people. That's government, for you. But we do have to laugh at the nonsense. It's better than getting aggravated.

Hugs,
Lou

One advantage, eligiblity to receive Social Security, and lets not forget Medicare.
I'm going on 64 this July. I often wonder when I'll change into being that image of old age. All I do is apply wrinkle and spot cream. If only they would go away, I'd be thrilled to look into the mirror and smile at myself. I do that now, smile into the mirror...isn't that what people do?
