There is also a nerve which runs from the elbow to the wrist which can cause similar pain (often happens if you are an individual that rests elbows on the edges of tables) It's called cubital tunnel.
Anyway... ( a little trivia there ) I've been tested for both. I've actually had the surgery in my right hand, as well as having had the joint removed from the right thumb (the base of it). It stopped the severe pain I was having. (thankfully!)
It was such a horrid deep ache inside the wrist which radiated up the arm... I still have problems with tendonitis, but usually it's manageable.
I'm actually left handed, and I worry about having to have that hand done as well, but it's going to have to get BAD to do it, as the recovering time of having the thumb done is quite extensive. lol
I thought it interesting that you didn't focus on the ergonomics of computer work as a precipitator of the problem. Mine, I think is more of a problem from being an artist... but my son, who is a computer animator (and is only 26 years old) has had pain since his late teens, having been using a computer keyboard since he was 6 or 7. So I can see that if things don't change in the way kids use their hands, I would think it could be a real problem.

I found this article very informative. Many people suffer this ailment which is painful and the numbness causes your hands to get weak. I think I had this but I use not sure until reading your post. Thanks for posting it.

This is all good information about carpal tunnel syndrome, but it does come off a bit dry. Also, watch out for missing commas after opening clauses. For example (in the following the missing comma is shown in brackets where it needs to be added):

This piece was great learning tool. I have heard of carpal tunnel and always thought it was something you got from being on the computer to long. Like the saying goes you learn something new each day.
