I love the librarian's response about emotional adultery and her insight that it's unfair to the writer's wife to compare the married relationship to the fantasy one of longing where the "soulmates" don't live together and pay bills together and budget together and clean the house with each other, etc etc.
I had that kind of marriage, where my husband fooled around with his college students, who loved to have him take them out to dinner but never had to worry that he actually couldn't afford that dinner with the rent that was due.
I hate the cynic's advice to treat himself to a dirty weekend to get it out of his system - and what if the wife of forty years somehow finds out. Will his infidelity be easily wiped out of her system??
Amen to the hooker's advice - sorry, the cynic really blew this battle of the answers.
As for the question about helping family members, that all depends on the circumstances of the family members and the extent and frequency of the help - should the writer and spouse help out a sibling, for instance, in a true emergency? Of course they should. Should they help out another sibling who has never held down a job because he would rather not work and just ask for handouts on a recurring basis? Certainly no.

I went with the belief that the family was a bunch of jealous people expecting handouts on a recurring basis. Repeatedly assuming they would pick up the tap was a hint. I agree is a child is injured and needs emergency surgery the ENTIRE family should pitch in...not just the ones they know have extra money.

This continues to be an interesting advice column. I think the ultimate charm of it is the fact there is input from three different perspectives. I like that often the solutions are so similar but ask the writer to approach it from different angles. Good job, Sasha, Ingrid and mystery writer.

Three opinions are always better than one. Getting us to agree is not as easy as it looks...LOL

That's the beauty of three--you needn't always agree.

These broads may not have all the answers, but it is refreshing hat they are not afraid to voice their opinion.

The Hooker has great advice about signing an IOU, but wouldn't you bet the needy relative will be offended by this contract.

Sometimes being offended can be a great way to build character...something few of these family members could use.
