This is simply a delightful anecdote from what seems to be a long and very devoted and happily married couple- well attuned to each others idiosyncracies yet always attuned to the possibility that love can fade

"Love means you never have to say you're sorry>" "quote from a movie/book" This very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very interesting read.

Deniz--
That's perfect. Plus the American Gothic is exactly right. Does not dominate like some pictures do, adds to the fun of the story.

I have no sixes so it has to be a five. Thanks for the fun.

LOL funny Dennis. This is hilarious and oh so true. But...
Spring is just around the corner so we will endure with some humor and love.
Well done.

Blessings

New England. Pretty in the fall, pretty in the winter, too, if you want a postcard. But why would anyone LIVE there? LOL! Roof cave-ins are serious problems. I suggest this spring you get into the attic and reinforce your cute Cape Cod roof with steel posts, four to six feet apart. That should keep your wife loving you. Oh, and while you're up there in the attic, clip your toenails. That's where I send Mark to do his... he's well trained.

Very enjoyable read, Dennis. I love a good toenail story with my coffee first thing in the morning. :)

I can only imagine poor Mark in compliance with your idea of "well trained"...picture Oliver Twist after he has the audacity to ask for "more"...We live on Cape Cod where the saying for years has been, "Sure, it snows from time to time, but it never lasts...the salt air and fog "eat it up". Well not this year...:) "I love a good toenail story with my coffee first thing in the morning." LOL I never said my attempts at humor are for everyone. Thanks for writing and the roof reinforcement suggestions...I'll get her right on it! :)

LOL! Your "loving" wife will be hauling steel pipes to the attic? What will YOU be doing? Your toenails surely don't clipping again. Maybe you can make dinner for her. LOL! You crack me up. :)

I make dinner the old fashioned way...Kentucky Fried Chicken...it's a Cape Cod dish. :)
reply by Phyllis Stewart on 21-Feb-2015
It's a KENTUCKY dish, silly. LOL!

I really liked your story of old married love. You chose a picture to illustrate this that I used in a poem about a similar couple (only decidedly more ill at ease) a few weeks ago. You write about this relationship in a casual, yet interested manner, whereby you set the reader up to think that the marriage may be in trouble, but you rescue us in time with your roof ruse. The gentle humour that pervades this tale is what I like best. The errant toe nail exemplifies this. An entertaining read. Thank you.

You are a perceptive reviewer but I was not really aiming at casual as much as the traditional presentation of New Englanders...a bit cold and distant, matter of fact...and then showing the underlying warmth of true love. I think you have the set-up down and appreciate your kind remarks. I found in the reviews that many do not realize the picture is a famous one by Currier and Ives. I am now going to track down your story and read it.

Hahahahaha! Hey Dennis. Have I mentioned that I want you to forget about sending me that parcel of snow? Delia would cut off my you know whats if she had to pick up any more toe nails around here than I already create! That was a great story mate and I love your work and your wit. Cheers Fez

You know what? This is exactly the antidote I needed to help combat my own spring fever. The easy-flowing relationship, the years of quips and snaps, the unequivocal love that has survived a half-century, all made me smile...and a whole lot envious.

Hi Deniz,

A six but I am out. A six in spirit.

I loved it. To start with I thought this was historical fiction based around the famous old painting.

You have our sympathies over the snow this year. Here in Nova Scotia.

I'm glad she didn't let you go on the roof, even if she knew your stated intention was fiction.

. . . Hey, Snoopy, you never came back for Death In the Air Part Two!

Best wishes,
Alison

Hope you are warm by the hearth.

Okay, I'm on it. Thanks for the good word. And I'm glad you know about the painting...I'm amazed at the reviewers who were ignorant of it. I assume our snow moaning's means little to you in Nova Scotia? You probably get a lot more than we do...Thanks for the review, Dennis
