This was an excellent and comprehensive poetic tale of the plight of the black man. It fully deserves the win in this contest. Well done, Lancelot.

Great job with your poem about Black History month. I like the balance between honoring the heroes who came before and asking the present generation, both black and white, to step up their game and that all history will be celebrated all year.

this is such a strong, dramatic write, Lance -

I think we all need to live in
the present and look to the future
and live in peace
whatever our colour or religion

we can't alter the past.

Good luck with the contest.

This is excellent. Before I read this I sort of knew this would be the direction of your poem, as with your other stories I have read on the subject. You are the only person I know of that actually has the courage to write like this, something which would benefit Black people. But like that white teacher told you, 'you can't force people to see what they don't want to'. You were beaten up for speaking out about what you believed was the truth. Your message is the message that Obama should be promoting; instead of that he is doing what you rightly wrote-he is dividing the nation. How very sad. I just hope you don't give up on your beliefs and quest. Political correctness is warping people's minds.
Your poem should win-the rhyming is excellent, the message is astounding-the best line being: Today, I look around and wonder what we have done with the freedom we've won? In my book, you should win. Bravo! Faye

Thank you very much. Not the only one, but it is nice to see more and more people understanding the faults in PC and turning away from it.

This piece to me is truly outstanding, lancellot. I've written many poems regarding racial issues in the past and it's a subject very near to my heart as well.

I have lived in South Mississippi my entire life and grew up in a small rural town where it was almost all white people in the community and schools. The negativity towards other races was overwhelming and sickening. Thankfully my household was different. My dad was a union activist and democrat, we were taught not to judge by skin color but to treat everyone fairly. Thankfully I've followed his footsteps, career wise and ethically as well.

I've studied the history and know a good deal about the wrongdoings that went on. Many whites did persecute the black man unfairly. But, as you pointed out far more than that went on as some blacks owned slaves as well. In Natchez Mississippi you can tour the house of 'The Barber of Natchez' he cut the hair of the plantation owners and ended up owning several barber shops. He owned slaves that stayed in separate quarters although he was a black man himself, there is many reports they wasn't treated that great either.

Times have progressed and to move forward and succeed as a nation in peace we have to leave the past behind. There is so many more issues in these modern times that call for all groups to work together now and splitting hairs over the past and pulling race cards is going to keep us all from advancing forward.

Sorry for my rambling review you just expressed my feeling exactly and really touched me with your very powerful piece of work.

I wish you the best of luck in this contest and applaud you for sharing this with us!

Brian

Thank you very much, Brian. I wish more people studied history, and learn from it, not try to live in it. You make so many good points, that I didn't know.

Sounds like you had an intelligent and fair teacher, Lance. I think your poem is very poignant and well written:

"I hope one day we will end this ridiculous yearly racial dividing of our nation,

And whites will stop crying about sins of the past that were not of their creation"

Good write all the way. Bob

What I fail to understand is why we as a people cannot treat each other as equals and feel we must divide the races. Through the years I as a white person have had many black friends and I have found those friendship very fulfilling. My hat is off to you for writing something that needs to be said. Blessings Patricia

This is outstanding, and it does go against the victimization grain. Where are 6 stars when you need them? It's amazing that you get your point across with excellent rhyme and flow, and I have not noticed much poetry from you before. It's unfortunate you didn't get to give your speech, and I doubt if things would be different today. Maybe it would have been even worse for you. You do an excellent job with your presentation of the history of African Americans, including some of the unpleasant aspects. Using race as a shield against accountability is a great point. I understand Rep. Mia Love had some interesting things to say on that point. Excellent work, and best of luck in the contest. judi

I am Choctaw, read my book, Choctaw, here in Fan Story. It will be published this year under the name SILENT HAND OF GOD. I like what you say in your poem. I know the score. Blessings to you. I hope you win the thing. You have my vote if I am permitted.
