War desensitizes people and a uniform gives soldiers cart-blanche to do almost as they liked.

This can be illustrated in many conflicts. Including the one at Owl Creek Bridge. Blood lust is just below the surface in a lot of us I'm afraid.

Your war was of the worse kind, a 'Civil' war where brother fought brother. So there must be many stories like this.

A well written poem, original and with a very good visual.

:) Mel.

A sad story effectively told in the first person.

The closing line is chilling.

What a terrible price the speaker paid for "freedom". At that moment, it must have seemed a hollow concept.

An apt post for Black History Month. It is sad that such a large portion of our citizenry was so ill used for so long.

Hugs,d

Well done. I was not aware of this story. I was not prepared for the ending. So sad to believe that these things did occur. Your poem had great flow. It is, though, a sad commentary on the state of the society at that time.

Yes, it is hard to believe how invisible Black people were during the Civil War, even after the Emancipation Proclamation. Thank you so much for this fabulous rating and your very kind praise. Rod

Many atrocities such as this, but many never mentioned. Glad you shared a bit of what is documented. You did well with the poem. It sang louder than Dixie!. LOL.

Very well done, Rod. We have family in GA, and so I have heard the tale of Ebenezer Creek - the brutality of war will never be underestimated, will it? This is a well constructed poem that moves at a good tempo and tells a great story. Your colloquial dialogue adds interesting flavor and authenticity. Very enjoyable.

This should be a great contender, and I wish you well in the contest.

It is tough duty writing narrative poetry and making it sound like it belongs. Meter and rhyme do not lend themselves to detailed narrative. You succeed and make it ring authentically. Well done you.

Well done you did the Bierce piece proud -- a favorite of mine. I like the rhyme scheme and rapid flow of the piece, even it it tells a very sad tale.

This meets the contest requirements beautifully. I enjoyed the solid rhyme and meter throughout which made for a smooth and enjoyable read. I think the use of a specific point in history was very creative and shows a masterful command of the poetic arts in order to translate it lyrically. I wish you all the best in the voting and thank you so much for sharing it with me.
