This is a sad but also a happy poem. A lot of slaves were free that day, but a lot died also. I liked the story and the picture. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing. Well done.

I am very pleased you interpreted my story as BOTH sad and happy. So many former slaves saw their dreams dashed that day and long after the war finally ended. Thank you for sharing. Rod

Congratulations for your magnificent work of art. It clearly depicted a history of cruelty and struggles among our black brothers. It absolutely touched my heart especially the end part when he survived but he was left with nothing. It's too much pain as I imagined perhaps regretting the day he survived. But that's life, struggles and pain will make us better than we already are.. : )

Hi Rod, this is an excellent story in a poem my friend, It is also a very sad tale and a terrible memory in your countries history, a harrowing tale of folk being lifted up freed, full of elation, only to be let down again by their so called saviours.

A historic poem, in that it tells of a horrible happening which your author notes filled in beautifully. Very educational. A perfect poem for Black History Month. Nice rhyming throughout. Reads very well. Les

Regarding your poem "Occurrence at Ebenezer Creek", it was powerfully written, as if from a narrator who was actually there on that horrible day. In my opinion, based upon your poem's words and your Author Notes, the Union Army was just as guilty for that massacre as the Confederate cavalry troops who swung their sabers as they charged through unarmed black people. If a commanding officer gives an unjust order, as General Davis did, subordinates have a duty and right to defy it. This was another shameful incident of American history I had not known prior to my joining FanStory. I can only shake my head in disgust at man's inhumanity to man.

Thank you so much for sharing--and reviewing--my poem. I concur with every word you said about Union blame and "duty to defy immoral orders.". I truly appreciate your comments and kind praise. Rod

It's a pity neither High School or College failed to enlighten me with this horrible piece of history. Instead, I learned about it watching Ken Burns' Civil War documentary last year on PBS.
You demonstrate a strong pen with the narrative. The details, powerful emotions are written as if you were there experiencing this horror yourself . If I had a six left, it would go to this fine poem. Good luck with the contest .

Oh my, I was so moved when I read this, what an excellent rendition of what happened. And how well you got into the person's mind.

This is a very strong contender in the contest, I feel sure it will do extremely well.

I wish you very good luck.

Another piece of history I knew nothing about. You wrote this as if you were there. Through the eye of the needle, you brought the time, tide and desperation back to the present, but long may it remain in the past.
Good writing, and good use of the vocabulary of the time.
Well done. An emotional write, indeed.
Best wishes,
RGstar

This is a very sad story, but perfect for the prompt
It's a critical moment in the war as it's the point at which freedom seems possible, but the realities of its meaning back then had hardly sunk in.
The poetry here is well devised via excellent quatrain's with good meter and rhyme.
The first person account, allowing for the emotions and details of the breakout and ultimate massacre to be related, is an excellent device for delivering a narrative of this scope in a poem of this length.
I wish you well with the voters.

RodG; After reading your authors notes and then your poem I was aghast and horrified that such ill atrocities had happened. I guess that was such the war back then that promises were never made to be kept in many of the Blacks were reprimanded by the fighting South soldiers for Confederates. Nicely written and very informative. The rhyming was done very well and was also each rhyming word was contingent to the meaning and concept of the line and the poem. The rhythms tempo, cadence, timing and meter all were very helpful in making the reading smooth, clear and easy. Good luck in the contest and may the good Lord be with you always my friend.
