You have definitely kept it fresh and interesting. There's some curves you threw that were totally unexpected. I thought they would burn at the stake twenty chapters ago.
It even speaks a truth in life, that you never know what could happen. To build up Valerius as an amazing doctor and savior of all around him, and now to have him cut down in his prime is painful to say the least.
Great chapter, I keep waiting for the last minute miracle, but I don't think that's forthcoming.
