Yes, a wonderful story, Ingrid. Brought a lump to my throat. It reminded me of the Bridges of Madison county. I love that film. The secret isn't the same, mind you.

Great work, and a well deserved win. Definitely should be published outside of fs.

Congratulations on this contest win--very well deserved. I understand by reading some of the reviews that this story isn't true. But you sure had me fooled. Excellent writing to convey such authenticity and realism. This story probably exists somewhere. Such a dark part of history that has changed the world forever.

Yes, this story does exist and some not so happily-ever-after ones are yet to be told. Thanks.

An excellently constructed short story from hook to resolution. Your pacing is flawless. I had to double-check that this was not autobiography. You've portrayed the protagonist's succession of emotions beautifully. Wish I had a 6 left for this. :) Nancy

What makes writing in first person satisfying, when done well, is that readers are convinced the story is autobiographical. I feel humbled by the number of reviews I received that commented, believing this was a true story. Thank you.

Wow! What a great story with a superb ending. This should surely win the contest. You told it as if it really happened, and that's a mark of great writing. :)

Thank you very much for your generous review and the bouquet of stars. Yes, it definitely is fiction, but many of the experiences and the knowledge from family stories are true.

To the author of "The Lucky Girl". I was born in 1942. As I read your story, I assumed you were about my age. Your category reads General Fiction, but I bet it's a true story. This is a story of my life. I put my mother in a nursing home after Daddy died. I cleaned out her house, the garage and the attic. I found similar things just as you did. Your story is very nicely told. Good luck in the contest. Carole

Many elements of the story are based on personal experience, but the story is fiction. It is a compliment to me as a writer that my story reads like a true story and I thank you.

I agree. If this is actually fiction, you are an amazing author. My vote is for you. Carole

This is an awesome and chilling story. I take it that this is non-fiction.
What a horrific life to have lived through in such awful times. Maybe not knowing why you were adopted may have been a blessings, for you may have not liked the answer. Just be grateful that you had two loving parents that took you in and gave you the love that you may never had had but now as a woman yourself, have the experience to love and have a family of your own.
You were very descriptive and though disheartening it enabled you to open up and start a new life for yourself.
Blessings for a very cherished and wonderful New Year in 2015.
Charlene

You have paid me the highest compliment, believing every word. While I come from immigrant parents and have lived through some of the situations, this story is fiction. Thank you very much.

What a task. And, what a discovery!

In my mother's family, there were photos, but no notes. People just "disappeared". When my cousin tried to discover who his mother and father were, there was nothing but paid bill receipts. No love letters, family photos, zip. They were married, raised four kids and died.

Your last couple of paragraphs summed your story up very well. Being human, we are prone to "stepping into it" without really knowing. I salute your courage for keeping that in.

Best to you in further writing,

Nigai

Wow! This story is amazing. I wonder if it's true. One change you might consider is: "Being an only child, it made the emotional strain of having to make difficult decisions hard to bear." It might flow better if you changed it to "Being an only child made the emotional strain . . ." This is purely up to you. I love the story.

What an incredible story. I am so glad I decided to review these contest entries. I've not read all of them yet, but I feel as though I do not need to read any further as I am certain I have stumbled on the best one. This had me in tears, first of all, because I just went through that same thing over the past 3 years with both my parents. Mom's progression with dementia, dad's stubbornness about hanging onto outdated foods in the fridge and cabinets. Yes, I really relate to this. But then, the surprise ending about Ruta! Incredible! I feel like inviting Ruta to our Messianic Jewish congregation!

I only saw one teeny weeny thing that needed correction here:
"Apiece of paper peeked" you need a space between A and PIECE.

Thanks SO MUCH for sharing this story. Best wishes with the contest. This one has my vote. If I had a six it would have been yours - to represent the six million plus whose lives were lost in that horrific holocaust.

Blessings and shalom,
Marsha

Unless a person is Jewish or the middle-aged child of immigrant parents, the horrific slaughter, the heroism of a few simple people is has become words in a history book to the younger generations. Yes, it is taught, but we know how it feels and how life has forever changed since 1945--not so very long ago. While most of the story is fiction, there are elements in my life within the story--including having to clean house. Thanks for your kind words.

Well written story about your mystery roots. The treasures of your mom held answers to your past and their joy was in you. Too bad they didn't tell you. Your story was long and susupenseful. You should do well in the contest. Wear the necklace proudly. flylikeaneagle
