Happy Birthday to Katie and may her remaining days be filled with peace and happiness. This is such a sweet story about Katy and your other pets along the way. We get more from our pets than we ever give in return. 8-)

Every time I read the phrase, unconditional love, I wonder if anyone knows what that means more than a pet owner. Our animals can be treated badly, but they still come back, expecting the best from their owners. Mine are pretty much pampered, but my pets have loved me like no man ever has. Pretty pathetic, huh?

What a lovely cat story, I have only ever had dogs, but I think that all pets give undying loyalty to their owners. Mine died last year and I miss them terribly. Your cats sound real characters, my dogs were, too. It is hard to imagine them not there, but the day comes. Well narrated and with much feeling. Faye

A beautifully sensitive tribute to Katy and her non-human companions. I understand your decisions, Ingrid. You're doing the right thing. Does Katy like catnip? Perhaps that's a treat she'll appreciate. And the warm spot by your heart. :) Nancy

Yes, she likes catnip, but she especially loves calves liver--raw and bloody and I HATE touching the stuff, but maybe for her, I'll make an exception.

I'm honoured. Two stellar awards in one week. Thank you.

Oh, Ingrid, I can relate to so many passages in this story, but especially when you described the water bowl...my heart sank, for I finally took my 13 year old cat to the vet after watching him almost drown, drinking so much water...I did not want to take him because I had just accepted that he was old and failing and there was nothing they could do, but, of course, it is diabetes and I am giving insulin shots twice a day....he seems to be responding, but when does one make the decision? I especially love the line about your cat sleeping next to your heart. Have a nice birthday party, a fancy feast.

Thanks so much. And she does curl up so that she can feel my heart beat as she sleeps.

This is so moving it brought tears to my eyes. I can relate to the love of a pet and have had several that I have outlived. Wonderful tribute to Katy, your dear friend and companion.

No one is 'irrationally' afraid of snakes...fear of them is a logical and natural instinct/reaction.

Oh I am so glad you agree on the snake issue. Even when my son was a kid, I had to wear gardening gloves, telling my kid I was allergic to squiggly things and pointing to my skin condition as proof.

Thans for the dazzlers. Wow! Tw in one week, so very generous.

What a tender story, Ingrid. Your readers should all be exposed to the expression of true love, human or critter. It's good for us to read it and I'm sure it's good for you to write it.

Just a few things to consider:

found is sub-zero weather on a city sidewalk by the Humane Society. [found IN ? sub-zero weather...]

On a daily bases, one or the other would attack, [On a daily BASIS ]

they rolled on the floor, a snarling mass of fur. [LOVE your image.]

"There are many times I was certain he was mentally challenged." [It was pointed out to me about a year ago by someone on FS that I use too many "thats".

Now,I don't question myself about them while I'm creating, but when I edit, I use the "find/remove" feature on word and check every single "that". It's amazing how many we can remove, while making our writing read more smoothly. Try it with your sentence, above. I'm only bringing it up because I had been writing over 50 years before I heard about it! For what it's worth.]

I know about the overuse of the word 'that,' but continue to forget to check for its presence in my writing.

Thanks for all the notes--changed them all and as you said, could live without those 'thats.'

I liked the whole piece for its honesty and good descriptions and narrative, but the last few paragraphs were not expressed well, in one way specifically, there was an inconsistency regarding the cat's death and when it occurred, vs the present moment in the story and the actions of the writer. Otherwise, five stars. She said the cat was dead, and then continued writing about the cat being alive, which was confusing. Four stars in my opinion

No, I specifically talked about the death of the dog, Suzie and the passing of my husband, even saying there were just us two girls left in the house. If you check again, you probably will notice.
reply by the author on 18-Nov-2014
I meant to include the reference that clearly states that Suzie died, not Katy. I'm sur e you missed this paragraph entirely/

Sadly, we lost Suzie a few years later, and Katy was the sole four-footed inhabitant. And then, my son left home and my husband passed away. It was just us two girls.

What a heart-warming story of love and companionship. The various facets of Katy's character are brought out with warmth and your anecdotes are leavened with lovely touches of humour to keep your reader's attention engaged. Happy Birthday, Katy!
