Powerful piece--devastating event depicted in vivid detail--I can see how this would be an indelible memory. Curious as to why/who "it was determined that this was the day" that ruined hope for a good relationship with your mother. Two excellent bonus poems!

No wonder you remember this flaming event. Your narrative poem tells it all. I don't think there was any need for an explanation. You might have included a stanza about your relationship with you mother after that. Certainly a frightening event for a youngster.

What a tragedy! You lost your barn, your twin and your communication with your mother but you have found the God. I'm so glad that you have survived and able to go back and visit after forty years.

Well done.

Thanks for your review. I am now 82 years old and that memory is still vivid in my mind.

Many people have told me that it was usually a highly traumatic thing that is their first memory, and that makes sense that it would take such an event to stick in the mind. My first memory was Mom explaining what death was when a nice old man down the street passed away. Like yours, it was traumatic.

Patricia, This is a very well written chapter to your book about the blazing inferno. That had to be a scary time. It was really good that you and your twin were ok. You used very good descriptive words and very good imagery from the art work you chose. May God bless you my friend! Teri

This is a tragic story that is forever in your memory and you told the tale as if it happened yesterday, this is a profound and powerful story Patricia and it has left you still pondering about that time, love Dolly x

What a terrible memory for a child to carry into adulthood. Praise the Lord no one lost their life. Children tend not to think ahead to consequences of their actions...they mostly live in the moment. This is quite a situation to be your first memory. Wow!

What a chilling memory! I am glad you had the courage to write about it, which I hope is therapeutic in helping to rid yourself of any guilt. I appreciated your "box" and "thorn" metaphors and reinforcing your memories with the poems. Warm regards- Joan

excellent writing and poem. We do things when we're young that we must think through seriously. I had an incident where I landed in the hospital for a few minutes because I crossed the highway trying to outrun my brother. Life can be tough.

A very well-written heartfelt story. Children do very dangerous things unknowingly and put their and other's lives in danger. We can only be grateful when they survive such a terrifying event.
