Left-handed, But Not Stupid

Being left-handed I was made to feel stupid.

Enjoyed reading. In paragraph 3, I would take out the word "and" before the word "needed," because I don't think you meant for it to be there. Thanks for setting me straight that left-handed people use their right hands for other things.

So many brilliant people are left-handed so I am surprised that the teacher tried to change your normal tendency. But I was corrected when I was young, too, so I guess we can learn to do things right or left!

Well this totally caught my attention as I skimmed through your titles and..... Guess what? I have a tattoo of a paw on my back to represent that I'm a "South Paw" (a.k.a. "lefty")!!! I'm proud of it because I am not stupid. I'm different - but I'm not stupid.

Fortunately for me, the people that surrounded me just taught me things - they didn't think about which hand I was using & when. For the most part, I pretty much use my left hand to eat and write and that's about it. That's just how it's been since I can remember. However, I never played ball 'cause I throw (way off!) and I had to used the same hand to catch as I did to throw - 'cause that's how I learned ironically enough. That never worked well together. Lol.

You totally nailed it with "I finally knew, I was left-handed, but not stupid." Beautifully written. :)

I know, right?! I told you!!! I had a feeling I was meant to connect with you for some reason - so I went with it. ;) I think we'll connect more than both of us even realize right now though. Time will tell.. ;)

Are you left handed? Thanks for the review and keep on writing. Others find fault with us probably because the are jealous.

Again, I appreciate the look back. I can sympathize with you. I was not left handed, but I remember some of the archaic thinking back then. I remember that I was so nearsighted that even if I sat in the front row of class, I couldn't see the blackboard. My parents didn't want to get me glasses, because "lasses with glasses do not get passes." How archaic! I finally got glasses and eventually, both of my sisters were nearsighted, as well and had to wear glasses. Maybe I'll write about that experience. You inspire me. Keep writing. Barb@theskysthelimit

Barb, I used to amaze the HS students as I could take a piece of chalk in both hands, go to the blackboard and write my name forward with the right hand and backward with the left hand at the same time.

Great story here I enjoyed the read & think you find so much comfort in your sewing talent, which I am envious, but in a good way...If I live to be 100, & get better eyes, I have a chance to do some beautiful handiwork...Where there is a will, there is a way, wish I could say that about my housework....

I have a grandson who was actually coaxed by his father to be left-handed, as he thought that meant the opposite of being stupid, that these types of people are actually considered to be geniuses, or a lot of them in history were, at least...My grandson is almost 18 now & a lefty, and excels in an elite High School...though, believe that no one is stupid & the person calling that person that is actually not very smart...And, kids should not be forced to change from right hand to left hand or visa-versa....Was surprised your mom was an employee at a mental hospital, when in your last story back she seemed very mentally unstable with pointing a gun at you, I thought, I read, might be wrong...Though, know we are subject to change, etc..

Thank you Caressa for the lovely review. I agree a child should not be forced to change hands either right to left or left yo right.
And yes my mom worked in a mental hospital and saw all kinds of people who some were criminally insane. I know what she said to me when I woke up to see her holding the gun in my face. But as a mother I fail to see how a mother could do that to their own daughter. I was able to forgive mom, but the pain still remains that I was not loved by her enough to have her come along side me and help me through a difficult time. I don't know if my mom was able to forgive herself for the act which in time I am sure she regretted.
When mom died, I was a person of two minds, on the one hand I was sorry my mother had died, on the other hand I was happy because she would never hurt me again. There were other times in my life where she treated me very badly.

Very interesting story. I have identical twin girls so they are mirror images of each other. Yes, one was left handed the other right handed. I had the same problem at school. However she still learnt other skills from me, left or right didn't matter she would try to work it out. Very inspiring read as it shows what you can achieve with someone who is interested in showing you how to do things. Genya

Genya, as a twin I have often thought that because of our prenatal position that my right arm was blocked by my twin and my left was the free one . My twin is right handed. A lot of the things I do have been through learning from books. I hated art when I was in the elementary years, as they gave us photos of the master artists and told us to make a painting like those. I wanted to do something that I was seeing with my eyes, not what another painter had done. It was not until I got into High school that I wanted to draw an paint. Our first assignment in HS art class was to draw a book on a table. Other students drew a square for the table and then drew a square on the table. I drew a table in perspective and did the same with the book on the table. I got an A on that drawing. Thank you for the review.

Wow, a story of determination, you go to the top of my class, Patricia for succeeding at what you did. I have heard of children being forced to use their right hand when they prefer their left. I think its cruel to make anyone do such a thing, we are what we are, and that's it. Nice essay. Keith. :)

pat, your experience is common from what my two left-handed sisters tell me. I am envious of them because they can do things with both hands. The last several presidents of the US are left handed. :0 GracieAnn

My sisters were not twins. All 6 of us were single births. It is a genetic thing, I think. My grandmother had 15 single birthed children and 7 of them were left-handed. Very high percentage in both families. :0 GracieAnn

Too bad you were made to feel stupid for being left-handed. As you know by now, being left-handed just means you think a little different than most.
I'm right handed but there are many things I do left-handed - guess that makes me weird :)

Well done, Buck
