If only that would have been true, the war to end all wars. But alas, mand fights on. This piece was sad, tragic, befittning the subject matter. And it lent just the right amount of helpless, hopeless feeling of the ground soldier. Once again, well done.

The results of war are ugly and the memories are worse. Why is it so hard to forget this was a war. The flow was smooth and I felt like I was the soldier sitting there on the rock with his head in his hand.

The sheer scale of this devastating conflict - the war to supposedly end all wars - constantly reminds us of the tragic amount of loss and destruction. This rendering takes the reader to the battlefield in a chilling manner of fear and anxiety, truly experiencing that loss and sorrow. Well done.

What a sad and desolate picture you paint with your words. People get so wound up about WWII that they tend to forget about WWI. Proudly, have a WWI memorial here in Kansas City, MO. "all young lost hope we bury their shells." is a woebegone look at all the young men - many not much more than boys - who laid down their life. Excellent writing. Blessings, Linda

Interesting. I definitely like the sense of futility in the second line. It says despite anything the soldiers did today, it cannot be truly stopped, for it wil all crash down on them tomorrow. Good job.

Superbly written, gw. I wasn't sure if I would like it given the massive amounts of war poems that have been on the site recently, but this definitely stood out in a positive way. Disturbing, but very well written.

I am 80 years old and I am confident that every hour since my birth two or more wars were in progress and three wars and an ethnic cleansing pending.
Your poem is a clear statement of the tragedy of all wars and by extension, reason to damn the politicians and religious zealots who have fostered it for centuries.
