"It seems that it once had the status of Kleenex or Xerox does in their particular fields of expertise." Yeah, and Frigidaire, don't forget that one. My granny (God rest her soul) had a Whirlpool refrigerator but still dubbed hers a Frigidaire, LOL. "Dean, go and fetch me some lard out of the Frigidaire." I remember that as if it were yesterday...

I was three when President Kennedy was assassinated, yet I still recall it being the first time that I ever saw my parents cry. I also remember being terrified, although I hadn't a clue as to what they were crying about. I think that was the scariest part of all, the not knowing.

People feel they have a right to call something, such as a country, for example, their own for many different reasons. It's their home, it is where they were born, invested time, money and effort into, raised families, and yes, even fought and/or died for. Anytime anyone puts their blood, sweat and tears into something, they feel they've earned the right to ownership of a part of it.

Haven't you?

Your contest entry is excellent, both in the writing technicalities and in its thought provoking content. Glad you exist in MY COUNTRY. Glad it is yours, too. Best of luck in the contest.
You might want to look at this sentence for re-wording. "It seems that it once had the status of Kleenex or Xerox does in their particular fields of expertise."

So true what you say about age determining your reaction and the events significance. The missile crisis had no impact on me at three years old. The assassination however, I like so many others remember in detail though only four, but almost five. My reaction at that age of course reflected those around me. Still it was powerful and has remained clear a lifetime. Interesting wuestion you raise. I can't think of a reason why we would be justified in claiming ownership of part of the planet.

Something happened between 1962 and the day you wrote this: America lost its adherence to the principles upon which it was founded and Patriotism became the veneration of real estate above principles.

Such is so important it should be a part of your memory.

Your prose move a tad slowly and could use a bit of punching up of the pace.

By these dates, I am much of an age with you, so I remember living through these same events in my childhood. Not having TV at that time, I was perhaps one stage further away from them than you. Make that two stages since I was also on the other side of the world.

I picked up on your line about 'owning' the land. Both the aboriginal people of Australia and the Polynesian first inhabitants of new Zealand have a very strong connection to their 'place' - much more so than the European interlopers who came and seized it in the name of a foreign monarch.

Does this make them better or worse, more or less warlike - not really, but it is something I sometimes envy.

Good luck in the contest.

Steve

We have similar memories, although I am a bit older. "Duck and Cover"...was that a laugh or what? Kennedy was the first election I was old enough-barely- to vote in. Nixon sweated...Kennedy was so handsome. Cuba missile crisis, I think I was in labor. Then came that November. I was crushed, wept for days. My little babies cried for cartoons.
I cried for my country. And thus it continued. My faith was killed. Murdered too. I was a witness to 9/11. Now on every anniversary I still weep. If I let myself, all I would write about would be misery. But I don't. Good piece.
