I'm sorely behind on reading and reviewing, but so glad I caught up to this gem, Mikey. I really enjoyed your thoughts of an eight year old during this well known period of time. And there still is plenty of saber-rattling and male rulers trying to show who has the biggest dick. History repeats itself endlessly. I loved your closing line about writing fantasy. So true. I vaguely recall the Cuban crisis. Just flashes across a TV screen. You got a pretty god account of what happened. I wasn't born until 1963. I like this dairy thing. You may have a knack with it. A story within a story is a good twist. SPAG looks good. Shucks, is that Slim Pickens riding a rocket? Saw that show decades ago. Love the picture. Count your doubloon Sir Mikey. You have a lot of historical moments in this essay. I thought it was a thought-provoking piece and you used some great historical moments. I remember the fear of Russia at that particular time, and about the assassination of the President. Major world events to remember. Well done!

Excellent story. It makes me remember where I was and what I was doing on those occasions. One thing you might look at is: "it once had the status of Kleenex or Xerox does in their particular fields of expertise." The sentence doesn't sound right. You might consider changing the "of" after status to "that". You did a great job of making people think about who we are and what we should be doing.

I remember it too - I was in grade school and thought every time a plane flew overhead that might be a plane carrying a bomb - I didn't understand how missiles work

This is a very good story. I also lived in the '60's' and I remember the debates and the lies Nixon told. I twenty years old when Congress sent us to as war the refused to ball a war until forced. I family and many friends to that war, in death and through PTSD and I was sitting in a College English class listening to a monotone professor when news of the Kennedy Assassination broke. I witnessed first-the injustice that was reeked upon the returning heroes who fought in a war America had no business being in.
Just like today.

I remember the Cuba crisis. It had little effect on me too. I was a child. The Kennedy murders had more of an effect on me. Kennedy was the first president I admired. As an adult, I still do not see the value of war. There as to be a better way. Great work.

Your opinions come through loud and clear. I think all of the events mentioned had a profound effect of anyone aware of what was happening. I think you were a bit young to feel the gnawing realization of danger in this world. The last part about feeling the country is yours is natural. I liked everything about your contest entry except the last statement. That is just my opinion. Excellent contest entry. Best of luck.
