Mikey, I LOOK FOR prose, so I was thrilled to find this here, even before I checked my messages and would have found it anyway. I do not like reviewing poetry and hate reviewing those miniscule japanese things that pass as some sort of poetry. But there aren't ENOUGH short works here to read. I wish there were.

As for readers, I depend on my fan list to generate reviews, and I've been here long enough to have accumulated well over thirty regulars who read NOVELS so they don't mind at all reading a short essay or separate story. THAT should be your goal. Get more fans, and the way to do it is to fan others whose prose and novels you like, and poets too, of course. THen review THOSE WHO REVIEW you first, and others if you have time. And pulllleeeez write more short stuff... I lovvvve your short stuff. :)

You have a very valid point here, but I am afraid the only real cure is splitting up the 2500 to 10000 word prose into 500 word parts. Any editing reviewers do will be quicker and the process for entering works is less time consuming. This being said, I find some excellent reading in both formats on Fanstory. I prefer my own chapters to be between 2000 and 3000 words total so chapters for review would be named Chapter 1 Part 1 and so on. Fewer folks review prose even with this, so do not inject too many funds into promoting until after chapters are complete. I think the site helps at this point by showing the best chapters each month. If you happen to see your piece mentioned I would promote it for more reviews at that time, and your future chapters may be reviewed by more readers at that point. Just my thought on it, I hope it helps.

If I receive a review from somebody, like the guy the other day who said he's not her to edit my work, I want to scream. Like you, I just want to know what works or what not, and if you enjoy the story. I too read all of my fans, and most don't need editing help, just an idea of the story is good or not. I do enjoy your writing, (most of the time :) ) as it is littered with your unique brand of humor. You're right about one thing, FS is time consuming, but in the end, it made me a much better writer, for which I am eternally grateful.

Doesn't that suck. You spend hours reviewing, trying to get enough to get on the first page, just so someone will look at it, and the first review you get bitchs about how long it was. Then the second review, says well it's not really my type of story, but I'll give you a four for it, because it is well written. Really the only soulation os to offer more bucks for reviewing prose, as if they will actually listen. Good piece, Mike.

Well mate. I am so overwhelmed with Member Dollars and I do enjoy reading prose even for a minimal reward. I also read all poems that interest me. Even quirky old Mikey my dear friend. Am I too easily pleased in what I read? Do I need to give more detailed reviews?

I must admit that you are one of the very few prose writers here that i review. I am usually guarenteed at least a laugh or two. Sometimes a great poem tossed in. Always great dialogue and amazing characters. You are on the money here. The rates should be at least triple.)

I might have to plead guilty on this one. I love rhyme both to read it and write it. I do review some proses when they are by the regulars who pop up in my message box. They just don't do it for me like rhyming poems.

Haikus are fun. They can be hard to review when there is so little said in a haiku in the first place. I like them but get a bit satiated with them as this seems to be the favorite contest prompt.

I review a certain amount of Spiritual writing. 'Righteous' has some really good stuff but after awhile I give those a pass as one can handle only so much of being preached to.

There are different kinds of novels and I assume people lean toward the kind of stories they enjoy. Hopefully, with the varied interests of all the readers it balances out.

I have trouble staying interested in crime stories. Not like yours, I mean the really gruesome stuff. The sex stuff is tolerable but after a while I feel I need a shower to clean my brain.

The stories about outer space or made-up creatures lose me. However, rather than not give them a fair review, I pass and leave these to reviewers who's interested in the style and can read it with optimistic eye.

First off, you must have received good constructive criticism on your prose, because this example is excellent, not outstanding, but excellent.

I was fortunate years ago on this site to have three outstanding reviewers shower me with 3* + valuable constructive criticism and husband me through the painful learning process though 4* performance to 5* and occasional 6* performance.

In answer to your last question, fan story will have to make cent-pumps worth two to three times as much for prose than for poetry and not make it so costly to promote over the magic one dollar line. What it takes to promote a poem to $1 should promote prose the $3 or $4. That would be fair and I do not see how it would decrease their profits.

My friend, you have hit the nail squarely in the eye. Seems
also no one remembers anything so breaking your long prose up and posting it in giblets is unsatisfying. Excellent stating of a real frustration.

This rating does not count towards story rating or author rank.
The highest and the lowest rating are not included in calculations.
