Incredible portrayal of those hours before... I read this and felt I was in the cell with that young man. Not knowing exactly what his act was to deserve the death penalty by firing squad, I could feel his nervousness.

Looking forward to part 2. John

Great story you have written, it seems like you were right there.....the dialogue was extremely descriptive and of course my heart went out to this young man who only tried to be a man and help his country. Looking forward to part 2.

Thank you Joan for the six, yes it is a shame for these boys and young men whose names are not recorded on any monument. In some cases their names were dis-owned their families and never spoken about again.

This is a riveting and very believable portrayal of what must have actually happened in those times. Unfortunately, we still deal with those same issues today in modern form. With the recent sensationalist reporting of a soldier brought home after years of torture in an enemy camp, but who has now been branded a traitor before the facts of his capture can even be verified... it is a reminder that some things haven't changed at all. Injustice is still a brother to indifference and a husband ignorance. (I could remove the masculine gender in favor of the female version, and it would still be appropriate.)
Thank you for bringing this issue to life with such eloquent writing. It will haunt me for quite some time. Thank you for honoring those who suffered this tragic fate in real life. Thank you, also, for including their families, who were burdened with shame at a time when they needed comfort and solace. This is a very, very powerful and masterful work. Thank you for so eloquently saying what needed to be said.

And thank you innerworlds, for reading this first part of my portrayal of one of 306 young men and boys that were executed during WW1. Their names remembered on NO memorials, and often dis-owned by their families.

I presume that this will be a wonderful storyline, a sort of memorial one indeed. I like your muse for the story and sure you will keep the steam throughout the entire posts. I like this

Oh my, I wonder what this young boy deserved to get that? You describe the anticipation very well. It sure creates a lot of tension. Job well done.
