Well written.
The topic is incredibly important around the world as well as here at home.
It is easy to. Read and difficult to comprehend in2014.
It is a call to action.
No girls should die at. All!

We can't give up making a lot of noise. I just heard on the news that the woman in Sudan will be released. I hope!

sacrificing the girl's lives was not worth - girls' - plural possessive
Strong use of specific illustrative examples to make your charges all the more convincing and appalling
I like your strategy of showing the kind of injustices that were rampant in our country such a short time ago before progressing to the injustices still rampant in third world countries. We are not nearly as removed from these atrocities as we would like to believe, and you make that point powerfully. Brooke

    Thanks for the catch--already corrected.

I thought it was important, not just to talk about what was happening somewhere out there, but to make the comparison as to what was normal on our own side of the world. I didn't need to make the point, but some male reviewers did, that they too were guilty of some of the attitudes prevalent with NA men. In some way, I hope that we can hope that there will be an evolution in attitudes towards women in third world countries.

Thanks for the visit, Brooke. It's always nice to hear your comments.

A gut-wrenching read! How horrific to be raped with steel pipes at any age let alone youngsters. It's good that these atrocities are coming to light. Your suggestion to boycott is a peaceful way to fight. More and more I'm looking at labels before buying from such countries. I'd rather pay more than support the savage behavior. A most informative and fiery write.

It's one small thing, but inches create feet that can grow to yards and then miles. How's Charlie--your novelist? That he would A) send you a response by e-mail after all you are trying to do AND B0 that the reply was so demeaning --and for that matter badly written--totally pissed me off--for you.

Wow! This is a powerful statement for worldwide justice! Your language, by the way, was perfectly appropriate.

A couple of comments on the contents, from the reviewing standpoint:

Maybe because I remember how easy it was for a man to beat his wife without reprisal from the law, the evening news about atrocities occurring to women, saddens me, but does not shock me any longer. [Sorry, I've read this sentence several times and I'm not sure it's saying what you want it to say. In the previous paragraph you spoke of the victories; in this paragraph you speak of how easy it WAS it seems that the news WOULD sadden and SHOCK you. Do you need an introductory sentence between the first paragraph and the second?]

our twenty-four hour news cycle [There! You hit the nail on the head!]

Really? What about tear gas and rescuers with masks? [I don't get the connection here. Sorry.]

Have you tried publishing this? How about a news publication? The content here is important and deserves a wider readership.

Thanks for posting it.

I corrected those two areas and thanks to your feedback, I can see the error and have made changes.

I only wrote it this morning and haven't given much thought to publishing. Any suggestions? I do get a fair number of my letters to the editor in print, but inevitably they call me up and ask to edit down to 300 words. This doesn't seem to work for a newspaper, but I'll try a few. Thanks for the alert and your support.

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions. It's just so pertinent and necessary a voice to be heard. I hope you find the market.

Wow - your voice of frustration and anger with the plight of many women in the world comes through loud and clear in this essay. I'm afraid we become so saturated with horrific crimes shown on the nightly news that we tend to become desensitized to the images. I do agree that Apathy is not an option and we, especially women, must not sit passively while so much suffering is taking place in our world today. Thank you for speaking out. Maybe this will be a spark for us all.

We do become desensitized and frustrated because we feel impotent, but there is always something we can do--make noise. But especially, I think these issues give opportunity to become global feminists. I hope they heed the call.

Thanks for the galaxy of stars. They are so welcome and appreciated.

The news said they know where they are but don't want risk killing them. There are still fathers killing their daughters in our country. Daughters live in fear and are forced to marry someone they will never love. Thanks for keeping this on the front burner. We invented nuclear power. You know damn well we could get those girls. It's political and hypocritical.

Yes there are abuses and if it's happening next door, we have no excuse. Not fifty miles from me a boy who was kept locked in a room for two years was rescued. A middle class neighbourhood where everyone walked by the house, but never knew. The boy, living in his own feces was malnourished and terrified.

Thank you, thank you for covering this so extensively. I am outraged that our country is not doing everything, I mean everything to save the woman in Sudan who just gave birth...we have diplomatic and financial power...what we don't have is time...pisses me off to the point of rage at John Kerry, who said we have to do a DNA test...these leaders are hapless and reckless with people's lives. I cannot sit silent. Ingrid, let's get fanstorians on this...solidarity...I am doing what I can on Facebook...I am calling my senators, my congressman and screaming at them...I hate our ineffective government right now....politics, all the time politics, why woman and children die every day. Shame on us, shame on our rudderless leaders.

I agree about the news being hard to watch. Every time I see something like what you have posted the horrible injustices and out and out viciousness that is doled out regularly to women all over the world, I tell my daughters the same thing. Don't take for granted how you are treated, don't step aside because someone says you are just a girl. Stand up for your self and for your gender. I grew up in the sixties and remember my mother being talked about because she wore a pants suit. That was about the worst of it. I liked the comment about the f@#k word being used. I bet there will be people who are more offended by that than the story's point. Great job. I just wish I had waited to read it tomorrow when I have a fresh stack of sixes.

This is great, and kudos to you for posting it. Those who talk about "a war in women" in this country have no idea of what war is about. You give such horrendous examples in this. I have given up hope for those kidnapped schoolgirls. Unfortunately, our heroes today are fictional, like Vince Flynn's Mitch Rapp. He would have found a way to get those girls out. Holding up signs isn't going to have much effect if the Nigerian government won't act. That was such a terrible story about the Pakistani woman who was stoned to death. I read today that woman who was sentenced to be hanged because she refused to convert to Islam has given birth to her baby and is still in prison. The US government doesn't seem to be doing much to help that family, and the husband is an American citizen. I'm afraid these extremists are getting the upper hand. Excellent work. judi

If you were in that jungle and gave up on ourselves, we would have no chance. If we give up on them, even if just to remember them in our prayers, then why not the world?

I believe it is up to the rational Muslims to deal with their radical elements. If they do nothing, it looks like they support them. Even groups like CAIR in the US are just apologists. judi

I'm a Christian, but I won't go after the evangelists and in my opinion some of these sects are hate mongers. That's too sweeping a statement--look after your own.

In a far greater spectrum, these victims are women--sisters--and I don't care who they worship, we still have a social responsibility to save the innocent.

I've read that some of the women in the Muslim countries go right along with the policies. Some supervise the clitorectomies for their daughters. You'd think they would want better for them. judi

They don't know ant better. they are uneducated, would starve to death and have never been indoctrinated to believe their life is worth as much as a man's. As for the age thirteen gift, they have been drummed into their heads that they are duty bound to submit to husbands. the idea of sexual pleasure is blasphemy--even if they had any sexual information. the ritual is as much a part of their culture as a circumcision for baby boys. And I have ben at many Jewish ceremonies and witnessed. It is very painful to the infant. Imagine how it must be to a girl that knows what is going to happen to her. and she--she thinks its a rite of passage--the cost of becoming a woman. Great stuff--and they are not permitted an education that might help them understand.

From what I've read, many of these procedures are performed on the girls by people without any medical training and often in unsanitary conditions. It is a shame. And it's a shame when the USA prevents people like Hirsi Ali from speaking out about this treatment at a commencement. She's been there and knows what it's like. judi

I read the story about the woman stoned to death by her family yesterday and was appalled. I thank you for your no holes barred essay that is long overdue. I hope this shocks those that are filled with apathy and ignore what is going on in the real world. We all, and I do mean ALL need to step up and make so much noise that this situation can no longer be ignored. It is beyond sad, it is horrific and you are right to say, "apathy is not an option."

I wish I had a 6 to give you for this, but as usual I am out. Thanks for stepping up and saying what we all needed to hear.
