Thanks for sharing, I escaped are missed Nam, this awesome write, supported by pictures was a sad, true view at what we that did not go have such thank those that did, foolish as it was the acts placed on the brother that made it home are equally, God bless one and All.

Hey Dean,
This gets six stars because of its honest delivery of a time a lot of us lived through. My draft number came up 9! First time I ever made top 10 in anything and it had to be that...I wasn't taken because of a back injury I had in high school. I was labeled 1H, which meant , as long as it wasn't a declared war, they were only taking 1A drafties. I just knew they would change that any day and prepared myself mentally. It never happened, but I had friends that went...they came back changed men, and I felt horrible for them.
Your verse stirs up the horrors of that time in such a way it almost hurt to read the subject matter. Still, that's the purpose of our art...draw out emotion.
Well done with this look back at a painful time in our history, best wishes, Bill

I read this and all sorts of thought were bouncing around in my head. Yet I sat here staring at my keyboard not knowing what to write. This is the most vivid and well written piece I have ever read about the ravages of war. I didn't know whether to cry or be sick so I chose both.
Sometimes, when a poem is well written, the message loses its impact; and other times the story is so well presented that the imperfect flow of the poem doesn't seem all that important. You have combined the two and come up with a powerful piece of work.
I don't remember the Vietnam War because I was young when it ended, but I have friends and family that were devastated by it. I also have two children that have served in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the stories they have told mirrored the horror in your poem.
I wish I could put into words the feeling that this poem conveys...the horror and sadness that engulfs the readers soul and takes them to hell with the Marine. God bless you, my friend, you are truly gifted. This is a remarkable piece of work.

A terrifying experience and recollection lurked behind the closed door of his mind - the slaughtering of the innocents in the name of peace and freedom.
War is wicked and so is man.
Soldiers who have to kill to win the war usually suffered post traumatic syndrome when they return home. Such is the story told very well here.

The door as ptsd memories- you really get in there, the darkest door that for many who return from the atrocities of war, remains ajar. Beautiful execution on this piece. When I was a kid, my dad's best friend who had just returned from 'man and lived down the street, that door caused him to pack up one night and vanish from friends and family for more than ten years. And he never returned. Powerful piece but I am out of sixes.

There may just be a lot of overlapping causes of suicide in middle-age men, and being a Nam Vet may just be one of them. So-called experts have named the recent economic conditions as the culprit, but it may just be more than that. Good stuff there, Dean.

The Darkest Door.' I could not agree more with you that Vietnam was a living hell for most US forces. I do not think any war in history was worthwhile, and Vietnam was certainly not. Well done.
