Read your author notes. Didn't know that about barn owls. Was expecting some kind of horror poem, but hey this one was also educational, as it is etertaining. Overall, a superb presentation. A give it a barn owl cry. Did you hear that? Okay, one more time... Les

I'm sure you'll catch a bigger fright if I had to scream at you, Dean. Lovely poem about the barn owl. My aunt owned a tobacco farm and the tobacco was cured in these massive tall barns. So there were always owls with their high pitched screams. :) Love owls. luv jada

Thanks, jada, so you know exactly what I'm talking about. This is based on an experience I had as a young boy, and it is the first time I can recall being truly scared outta my wits! Of course, I just had to go traipsing off into those dark fields and woods to see what was making that noise. I did, too, I went went back and saw him many more times afterward.

    Thanks so much again!

We were in our tent at night and heard the scream of an animal dying...in the darkness it sent fear and chills...in New Zealand we have a native owl too but it's cry is ...More Pork More Pork.....not near as frightening unless you are a piggy... :o)
I love this poem...and would have given a six...it's superb
God bless

Thanks, kiwijenny. More pork, that's what the cry sounds like? That's pretty interesting, I'd love to hear one sometime.

If you haven't guessed already, I'm a bird lover. All kinds of birds, from the common sparrow, to the exotic Macaw. I appreciate you taking the time to read an review this for me. It is based on an actual event, from when I was a young boy.

Had I six stars they would be yours. Called many screech owls up to my boat many nights on the river while trot lining. Well written Dean and good wording. HA. Ha. No typos or misspelled words. Imagine that! Shalom friend.

Scream or no scream I love those creatures .We associate a lot of negative thoughts with this birds .but owls are said to be wise.
We have a peculiar kind of bird in our villages(I am not sure they are still there or they too are a dying species)Its cry sounds like 'Poova Poova'-in our language it means 'let's go 'It is said to be the harbinger of death. Some death is supposed to occur in the vicinity of its cry.I think they must be a species of owl.Lovely poem about your encounter with the barn owl.******

As always a most stunning presentation...this new large format that I don't like for myself...is absolutely perfect for your works of art - words and pictures. The notes were interesting as well, always nice to have 'the facts sir - nothing but the facts'...

Thank you so much for a not so scary read - loved it - Dinah

Hah, you are very welcome, Dinah. This was based on an actual event from my childhood. It's the first time I actually recall being terrified.

Growing up in the country I can attest to the call you speak of. The first time I heard it was so young the sound was as if Alfred Hitchcock came to visit. As I grew the sounds of the night were peaceful, the crickets, the distant train, the hoot of other owls. Your picture was an invite to go down memory lane. Thank you so much for sharing. Terrie

I particularly liked the structure of this one, Dean. The story unfolded with just enough chilling detail to put your reader there with you. I remember doing a jungle survival course once and being terrified by the noises of the night only to find that most were made by small insects not the wild animals of my imagination!

Thanks, Tony, I'm really happy that you enjoyed this one. It is based on an actual event from my youth. It is the very first time I can recall being actually terrified, so scared, I could barley move. But, I learned a valuable lesson that night. Things are often not as scary as they seem, and the darkness and things that come out with it is nothing to be afraid of.

Interesting. I have been on a farm before, but never to the degree that I heard an owl scream.

That might make me stay away from farms altogether...lol

Awesome work here!

Thanks, Bill, I appreciate that. That's exactly what the barn owl's call sounds like, a scream. They do it to attract a mate, or when they spot prey. Since this is based on an actual event from my youth, I can only hope that when that barn owl began screaming at me, he had neither one in mind...

Indeed in darkness things aren't always what they seem. Your imagination sure runs wild. I love the poem above. I can place myself in that place at that time you describe so perfectly. I can even hear the screech. Excellent job!!
