Hi Debbie
I know how closely you worked with Alvin. His loss must be especially deep for you. My heart goes ot to you and of course to all who feel pain at his loss.
Your tribute is beautifully presented. Your tanka expresses a huge part of who he was. To many of us, affectionately known as "Teach" we knew his passion to teach, guide, encourage and support us in our own love for these Japanese forms. While he also was a master at the sonnet, his greatest rewards seem to come from teaching the Japanese aesthetic and how to work within the traditional and contemporary guidelines of the forms. You have described in your tanka the essence of his spirit as a mentor and teacher. He simply 'glowed' when one of his students published.
Good alliteration in "talented/thrived/teaching", "student/submit" and the add of 's' consonance in "loss/students/us/works", consonance of 'l' in "loss/talented", assonance of 'u' - "courage/submit/publication", near sound of soft 'o' in "mourning/loss/courage". Loads of poetic technique and a fine honour to our dear Alvin. Hugs - Lovi xoxox
