Amada, this is a great tribute to someone who loved to teach and pass on his knowledge. May his soul find peace in the Lord.
In sadness

I'm so sorry for Alvin's loss. I have not written his work, or taken a class. However, reading through your poem, I wish I have. I'm sure he's smiling down on you.

I think Alvin would have been pleased with this haibun, you have written it from the heart. Now he is smiling down at you.

A wonderful tribute, sharing your response to the news of his death. The opening stanza is poignant. The whole prose section flows well.
Good simile here:
Like dipping a toe into freezing water, I read the news.
Great metaphorical voicing here:
I waded from the edges of my consciousness to the center of the tragedy, taking short laps, swallowing it all in tiny, manageable sad bits.
THIS LINE GAVE ME GOOSE BUMPS:
Since then, I swear I can hear the bliss of a rose when it blooms...
Very apt tribute three-liner here:
sage and wise mentor
who taught me to see and hear
each leaf has a story
Nicely done!
RIP Alvin, beloved by many.
Love,
