Hello:

I could feel the sorrow, the loss as well as the admiration and pride of having known such an unique individual.

Take care,

Ray

You've expressed a great sentiment! What a great line to pass on to the rest of us "don't just look and describe in cold. No. Look and voice what that something is telling to you". I like this advice very much. Indeed, I try to do this. It is interesting, as we read all that is written and told throughout our lives ... and in FS ... we have that choice to shrug off what others say or to listen a little closer and try to hear what they are saying. Our first thought may be the grammar and how it is told, yet if we listen a bit more intently, we'll realize the style and methods are a part of the whole story.

OK ... this is just me going forward with the seeds that you planted through this nice essay ... which were seeds planted by your teacher and mentor ... thanks for passing these thoughts forward to the rest of us!

I like so much what you say here, dear garcon. Yes, he also said "to listen with the internal ear..." I do, I do, sometimes I drive people crazy...:-)

Such a lovely piece of writing as a dedication to Alvin. I am learning, although I never knew him, that he was not just a good teacher to many of you but also a friend. What would Alvin have said about your 18 syllable three line poem I wonder. The words however are lovely - especially the third line. You have written from the heart. Very good. Regards Dorothy

I don't even know the deceased & I don't know what a haibun is, but your outpouring here, & especially the poem at the end, put a lump in my throat. I absolutely love the last line of your poem, made more meaningful by the quote you shared. Great tribute. Thanks for sharing.

Each leaf has a story is a powerful line and this is a wonderful haibun. I miss Teach and am still stunned by his passing. Your words capture how important he was to you and many others.

Never mourn the death of a loved one. Store fond memories in your heart so they will be with you always. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words.

You are so lucky to have been mentored by a great teacher. I never knew Alvin, I just joined FanStory last year and I don't remember if he had reviewed some of my posts. But the kind of outpouring from his friends and students, all the members of FanStory family gave me an idea how great he is as a teacher and friend. Isn't it great, don't just describe the rose, listen to the voice of the rose as it blooms. Wow, what a useful formula in writing poetry. Thanks for sharing this tribute to us.

I have alternately laughed and cried all week. How much I will miss him and oh the stories we shared. He was very fond of New Orleans and I find it ironic I learned of his death on Mardi Gras day. I picture him dancing the second line on streets of gold now.
