Sorry, it is only Tuesday and I am out of 6s already. I agree with you 100 percent. I have asked the same questions and, like you, still do not know how the ranking works. Last week I was 22 on the novel list and today I am at number 10. Don't know how that happened. I prefer to be back in my days of ignorance. I remember receiving a PM from a member congratulating me of attaining number two status. I didn't even know what that was or how I got there. It IS frustrating but what I do, is just not pay any attention to the ratings any more. I do appreciate the numerous helpful suggestions I get and LOVE the spag hunters that point out mistakes. I don't know what I would do without them. This is a terrific post and hopefully will get through to those that DO know how the ranking work and give us a straight answer...or not.

Believe it or not, through this process /I have learned how one gets to the SOM, but even these folks had to figure it out on their own. now if someone can just explain the ratings, I'll e good to go back into the mist of oblivion.
reply by Sasha on 04-Mar-2014
I liked oblivion. It was far less confusing than constantly trying to get a bloody answer. And don't get me started on Tom's generic responses to my questions...now that's just plain rude!

Ingrid. You have raised some really interesting questions, and backed it up with sound reasoning. You have also shared some info that I was unaware of. You plead your case by literally breaking it down in increments.

What I don't understand, drives me crazy. I really don't get this stuff and just want answers. Maybe I won't like them, but at least I'll know what the parameters are. Thanks.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have every single one of these thoughts going through my mind and I know I am not alone by any stretch. I had a running message battle about rankings a couple weeks ago when a writer popped into the top of the rankings out of the blue. It was clearly a glitch as the writer had two reviews and a couple hundred comment only reviews. I got nowhere with "The Tom" (love it). I finally just dropped it. True the rankings don't mean a great deal when it comes down to it. But, they do mean something and they are important. It is a pretty damn big thrill for me to see my name up there with yours and some of the best authors on the site. No it doesn't mean I am as good. But, it does mean that I am improving and working my butt off to become that good. The ratings reflect that I think. Nothing is stopping anyone from doing the same thing. The Story of the month, poem, novel chapter etc. that is different. That should be about merit and not some computer program. That is about who is the best writer. And like you I am not saying a word against the fine work that is nominated. But, the process is vague and we should know the process. Why the hell shouldn't we? All of this stuff matters to us. Like you, it is the people and friends I have made here that keeps me here. I wish our site would let us know what is going on. I think everyone here wishes that. Aren't we the reason there is a site? Great piece. Thanks again. You certainly speak for me. mikey

I don't think anybody has worked as hard as you have to reach the top of the chart. And when I say nobody I don't recall a single writer who has posted daily--every day.

There's no question your writing has improved. To me, it's like night and day from when I first popped in to read your work. no different for me. I still keep my old stuff alive and revisit occasionally to see where I began.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be at the top of the totem pole either. I really don't recall a time in my life when I strived to be average--part of the pack.

I just feel strongly that the scoring structure should be posted for all to understand, both in the site-sponsored monthly series and the rankings.

    Hugs.

Good diatribe. LOL!

I was told that the worthiness of a piece to be nominated for a '...of the month' award is based on a calculation of 6:5 star ratio. That's it. So, a piece with 100 reviews - 80 five star and 20 six star - will be trounced by a piece with only 10 reviews if five of those 10 reviews are six star ratings. Popularity (being a six star review) is 20% on the 100 review piece and 50% on the 10 review piece.

I think it's a good way of doing it, because it allows someone who doesn't promote high, but might post exceptional work, to be at least nominated. They likely won't garner the votes, because chances are if they don't promote high, they won't have as many fans, and fans will tend to vote for those folks they 'like' as opposed to a piece of quality writing from someone they don't know. Ravenriter is a good example of that. She's a brilliant writer, but doesn't promote, so doesn't always get the recognition for BOM or SOM. She's won a good number of site contests, though, because she writes very well and the committee recognize that. That fact also proves to me that the committee do base their judgement, for the most part, on the true quality. Having said that, there was a site winner recently whose post has at least four or five glaring errors in in. That bothered me, but I said nowt. What would be the point? I'd be accused of sour grapes, and it's not worth the hassle.

Second and third place prizes are little more than a pat on the head.

No idea who the committees are.

Non-Americans don't get the Visa. We get an Amazon gift certificate, or a $100 paypal coupon, or $100 member dollars. Your choice.

The rankings etc are calculated by computer - they have to be. There are so many posts and reviews, there's no way it could be done otherwise. I seem to remember seeing the formula once, somewhere. But I can't remember where. No doubt it was on the forums.

Keep truckin' .

Av

No doubt I will be accused of sour grapes, but isn't it odd that you have an answer and I can't find one on site?

This post has been bringing in reviews by the truckload. Do you suppose that's because thers might share some questions as well?
reply by Cumbrianlass on 04-Mar-2014
I can't remember who told me. Maybe I just worked it out for myself. If you look at the noms, you'll see the pattern. That's why the last chapter of a book often makes the BOM nomination. Last chapters garner tons of sixes.

Just keep writing. You're good at it.

Hello,

I think there are many here, like you, who share these concerns. I have questioned the site maintenance at these odd hours. Recently, I had to contact Tom twice because I received five reviews from the same reviews bringing my story to recognized states. I didn't wish to keep something I did not earn. It made me wonder if I actually lost reviews during this same period.

I think your story is well-written and although you wrote this on behalf of your concerns, many share the same feelings.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

Hello S.E.,

You hit the nail on the head with this piece. A person wonders if their post of 5 points and 20 cents has the same chance of winning as a 12 point and 1.23 post. Is the latter better because it offers more? And because it offers more and gets more readers and thereby more reviews, is it really award worthy because another post had a lesser pay out? I think what you ask is noteworthy. I hope FS clarifies your questions for all of us to share. ;) Chrisfiore

I doubt it, but I'd really like to know. For sure, the more reviews--read money spent--the higher likelihood...

Personally, I've figured out to save my stories for the 24 hour period before closing to improve my ratios. It seems that's what gets noticed. And you, my friend, have greatly improved mine with this six, for which I thank you sincerely.

Well, the site actually posted a notice this morning warning members they would shit down between 11AM- 1PM...maybe they were taking note. I'm certain they have members who get on the forum, get into conversations and report back...why else would they...all of a sudden.
reply by Chrisfiore on 05-Mar-2014
Well good, I have noticed some things, too recently, like what you said about the question marks appearing on some of the posts put up. Also the word count on my computer doesn't match their word count when I post. Probably why I missed out on the 1000 word contest. ;)

But you know, when you wrote about becoming a better writer... that really is what it is all about. I have accumulated scads of material that I would not have had if not for FanStory. So in that respect, I have been a success!

I hope you are doing well, there, my friend. They say spring is in the air... ;)

Good questions, as a new member I have wondered how you can reach the top 50 finding out that money often paves the way , so many new comers never get their work read for a quarter or less. There are many great, talented writers here but somehow the money only buys us a blue ribbon, and like you mentioned no editor is going to say wonderful we will use that on your new book jacket. I enjoy the people here, the reviews, the friends I have made but I will no longer pay to reach the top with my own money just for a blue ribbon award that was in my childhood school rooms. Terrie

to get your work read and acquire fans who will be notified every time you post regardless of pay-out, you have to post with a certificate. the two-gay one is $7. without it, your work will not be circulated after two reviews. With it, and five reviews (5s & 6s) you'll get on the front page under 'well received stories.' That can often lead to more readings and more fans. It does work and you don't have to pay any more for front page posting.

Had to give you six stars for this!

A well written research paper with plenty of unanswered questions. I hope FS management get to read it, a clear, easy to understand policy regarding ratings would certainly help mugs like me understand.

It amazes me that corporations seem to have just discovered that they must look after their customers. I retired from my real estate business years ago, but I became very successful by making sure that customers and tenants enjoyed the experience of coming in or contacting my office. I used to say that when the carpet wears out - that's good!

Apart from content, you have produced a well written essay which is an interesting read.

You are very kind. both with that dazzling bouquet of stars and your generous feedback. I too spent a lifetime in sales and we don't need to explain how making a person enjoy the experience can add to the bottom line.

    Thank you very much.

If you are still uncertain of the process after five years, imagine how us "newbies" feel?! Also, I do appreciate the established members, "the big girls/boys" helping and mentoring new writers to the site. It is the connection with a community of writers that keeps me engaged. I have connected with people all over the English-speaking world...for me that is the prize. Thanks for this dialogue. I hope others will weigh-in.

For a newbie, you're doing very well on the site, but it is tough to figure out all the quirks. When I began, I was sure I was nut, couldn't figure out a lot of things.

This site did go down on Sunday, but I've been on this site most of today and I have had no interruption except for it being a little slow at times. You either enjoy the site and the way it is set up to run, or you don't resign up in the next year. I have been on this site since 2003 and I have seen many improvements. Nothing id perfect and we all would like to see things improve for the better and I have seen that since day one here.

Oh, by the way this sentence needs improvement...
I am discourages and cynical by my ignorance.> Discouraged
It's just a typo, but I thought I would point it out for you.

This article was well written even if I don't agree with everything it was saying... John

Thanks for the spag alert. I'm not sure what you disagree with that I've said. Knowing how things function is not un unreasonable request. It's their game, and you're right, I can play by the rules or quit. All I'm asking for is a rule book.
