Read this sentence several times and there are words missing ... or punctuation or something, since the last half doesn't make much sense.
Yes, mammals feed their young milk from what are correctly called "teats". Since humans are mammals, human females nurse their young just as my mother doggies nursed their puppies. More teats are needed for animals with larger litters, which makes sense. Humans usually have no more than one or two babies at a time, so two teats suffice. Cows have four teats tho they have no more than two calves, possibly because of the awkward angle at which the calves must nurse. Dogs have eight teats because they have litters usually of more than two...six is a common number. Dobermans can have up to twelve pups, so they have to take turns nursing and sleeping, but it all works out. Those animals without enough teats for their litters died out as the species evolved, leaving the surving animals with "the right number" of teats for the average number of young. Nature is very easy to understand, if you just make the attempt to learn why it all works so smoothly. Only what works best survives to reproduce more of the same, and we end up with what we see around us. Beautiful in its elegant simplicity--survival of the best mutations.
