Hi Treischel,

This is a wonderful poem and I enjoyed it from the first line t the last. Your author's notes are informative. Your rhyming scheme is solid and gives the lines a lilting quality.

The ground between is choking
With mortal clenching fear.
Officers, to the charge provoking
Reluctant troopers at the rear,
When bugles blow.

I like the entire poem but the above verse is especially powerful. Well done, chey

A lot of pathos in your words. Well done. And a lot of depth. I particularly LOVE the last stanza. So true. "Best Guy" doesn't always win. Just the one who "doesn't yield." So well put! I do have to point out (can't help myself because this war is my 'specialty') that the war was NOT fought over slavery. Then, as now, the politicians masked their true goals w/ a common hot spot.
No reflection on your talent. The poem takes me to the battlefield. I have visited and studied many.
As usual.... fantastic work

Thank you. I agree. I went with the common interpretation, I know it was about States rights and that the South felt shut out of (ignored) by the government.

An interesting poem with a good picture. I like the story it tells and find no fault with the format. It seems to flow well to me. Thanks for sharing, Brent.

Boy ain't that the truth! No wonder God has decided to use trumpets to announce His coming! The end of death and dying! Great job with this one.

When bugles blow. ... this short, clipped refrain is very effective - a sort of bell-knell.

I could see the battlefield in my mind's eye, oh, skillful poet-tale-teller!

I like the abab rhyming with the additional refrain line
good alliteration in bugles blow
and in bloody battlefields
a thoughtful look at the price of victory in war

Nice photo you made of this historical play. And I liked the form of the poem, did you invent it yourself? Sounds and looks good. Thanks for sharing.
